Excluding photos with a certain keyword
« on: August 31, 2008, 05:44:57 am »

I have a lot of photos from my recent trip to Beijing and Hong Kong, and among them are numerous snapshots. I have already keyworded the snapshots as such, but can't figure out how to filter them OUT when I'm browsing through the catalogue. Library Filter metadata pane seems to only be able to include keywords!

I've come up with an ugly hack: move the snapshots to a different physical folder, and keyword the rest of the shots as "real photo" or somesuch. But I'd rather not go through all that hassle, as a proper filtering mode should allow exclusions as well as inclusions.

Any ideas?

Set up a smart collection Keywords / Doesn't contain / Snapshots.

Thanks, that's an easier work-around than mine!

Why not use Library filter: text, and Keywords / Doesn't contain / Snapshots?

Because you have to set it each time (though you could save it as a filter preset), or you'll find it's applying when you don't expect it to. The Smart Collection is more explicit, is always visible in Collections, shows a counter, and is available in the other workspaces such as Web or Print and via the FilmStrip. Use the Filter Panel for temporary filtering, SCs for things you expect to last.

Another option is to just put ! in front of the keyword when doing a text search.

Example, I want to find pictures with keyword "tree" but no keyword "people"

So I enter "tree !people" into the text search.
