Pase One p30+ Back on a Technical Camera?
« on: August 28, 2008, 04:27:06 pm »

I shoot landscapes exclusively with a p30+ on an AFD II and I'm having a hard time getting both foreground and background in focus. Blending several images isn’t an option for me so I’ve been thinking of getting Silvestri Flexicam (or similar) and a few Rodenstock HR lenses to solve this issue.

I’m wondering if anybody has some real world experience using a p30+ back in combination with forward or back tilts on a technical camera equipped with standard to long lenses – 60mm and up.  Are the color casts minor or extreme? Will the micro lenses make even the slightest tilt impossible?

The P25 and P45 are, by design, the right backs to use with swings/tilts/shifts. The P21 also does an okay job, performing well up to a 20 deg tilt-only (less if you're combining that with other movements). The P30 is poorly situated for tilts/swings/shifts. I don't have a number, but it is substantially less than 20 degrees.

I have also wondered about small tilts and swings. I always hear it's not recommended to use the microlens-equipped backs on these cameras but I have never seen samples. Can someone please do a test and post some images?

I have tried my P30+ on a technical camera and found that if I was using a 72mm lens and controlling movements to less than 10 degrees, I had no issues.  When using wide lenses and more tilt/swing then yes, I got color shifts.

Doug is right, about using one of the other backs if this is your main purpose.

However, if you are using more normal to long lenses with minimal movement the P30+ works fine.

I tried my Hasselblad 31 megapixel back on a Horseman SWD.  The shifts with a wide angle 35mm digital lens gave color shifts. The issue is the microlenses.   Mark

Hi Mark,

I ran into the same think with the Phase.  However the OP was asking about minor shifts and longer lenses.  Using a standard to longer lens and limiting to 10 degrees of tilt/shift, the P30+ was fine.
