5D constantly returning to default settings
« on: August 28, 2008, 10:42:06 am »

Hello all

Haven't used my 5D in about two weeks. Turned it on today and noticed that my custom settings had gone back to default. Reset them and moved aperture from 2.8 back to 11 (Av priority - where I normally have it). Turned off power - everything reset to default and aperture back at 2.8. Set custom settings again and aperture. Held down shutter button half way with 11 displaying then released - 6 secs later when av display disappears and I press shutter again back to 2.8 default. Other customs functions remain as set. Change all settings once again, wait for 1 min auto power off - everything reset to default.

Battery showing full charge - tried spare charged battery same result.

Date and time unaffected - I guess that changing the small clock battery wldn't affect above situation.

Had the camera for less than a year but it is grey market so not covered by a warranty  Bought in HK but now in UK.

Any thoughts before I cry

Ross

Did you replace the other battery?  (That is assuming it is like most canons and has a separate smaller battery to maintain settings.)

Check the backup battery.

Haven't replaced the little battery yet - will try that - but shouldn't my date and time then also be affected?

I would assume your date and time would reset. Maybe drop canon tech support an email and see what they say.

If you have the mode dial set to "C", you might be running into this:
The Canon 5D "C" Mode Gotcha

That "gotcha" pretty much ruins the C modes for me.

That's why I never use it. The original idea was tremendous. But this glitch ruined it. I wonder if Canon fixed it with the subsequent cameras with C modes. Does anyone knows?
Sure it would help to have this fixed and have those 3 C modes like in the 40D, but now I learned the 50D got only 2. Maybe this will be another unlistened "Dedicated MLU button" issue.
Oh Canon! - Why are you so clever and so dumb at the same time?
