Paper Epson Glossy and print of shadow
« on: August 25, 2008, 01:12:09 pm »

Hello

I'm an absolut digital beginner in work of printing.
I have experience with analog printing and baryt paper.
Now I start with an epson 2400 printer to learn digital output workflow.
I test papers.
I print a coloured foto on glossy paper of epson.
This paper was attributive by the printer.
The black shadows on the print are not glossy, but matt.
I can see it when I have a slanting look over the print.
So the print ist not like a photo
I think I have the wrong workflow, it's clear for me.
Please can someone give me a feedback about my wrong workflow or what is most relevant for good printing.
1) Paper
2) Ink
3) Printer
4) Software
5) Settings of printig software
6) Others

Thanks for help

Because the inks in the 2400 are pigment (pigment incapsulated in resin) they rest on top of the resin coated paper, they don't soak in.
This causes the ink to form in a layer on the media which is less reflective than the media surface, this is called 'gloss differential'.

It's considered an engine limitation of pigment inks which is why, among other reasons, some printers come with a GO (gloss optimizer) channel to lacker the print with a glossy coat.

Thanks for answer.
Can it be that I have used the wrong ink ?
I read that I must (should ?) use the ink "Photo Black" for glossy color paper and NOT the used ink
"Matte Black" ?
Before I change the cartridge this should be guaranteed.

Definitely use "Photo Black" ink for glossy and semi-glossy ("luster") papers and "Matte Black" ink for matte papers. This will greatly diminish the "gloss differential", but it may not eliminate it completely.

Thanks

So I must use in Photoshop CS3 in menu Print window the color handling from Photoshop.

In Printer Profile I must than choose a profil.

I can see 12 profiles for Epson printer at begin with SPR2400 and than different other remarks.
I think I can not use the remarks like Matte.
From Hahnemühle I have a ICC profile > HFA_Eps2400_PK_FABaryta < for combination Baryta and Photo Black.
I have this stored in:

HD > User > Library > Colorsync > Profiles.

I must connect the Hahnemühle profil to paper.
I can do this in ColorSync application.
But If I connect this I see in menu Print always the name "SPR2400 name before"
Is there a way to see in PS the paper and right profile like

SPR2400_HFA_Eps2400_PK_FABaryta
