Let printer manage color
« on: August 20, 2008, 01:40:56 PM »

Just an interesting observation. I send out most of my prints, but do like to print some snapshots of the grandkids. I have been using CS3 to print and just let the printer manage color. Use a Epson R280.

After upgrading to Lightroom 2 I decided to try printing from there and let the printer manage color. Colors are way off and look bad. And looks fine printing from CS2.

The only difference I can tell is my images in CS3 are sRGB and in LR I have no control.

Any comments as to why that would be?

I've been using printer managed color in LR 2.0 on a HP B9180. I set the color space in the printer driver to Adobe rgb. On this printer it's important that the paper type in the printer settings match the paper you are using (duh!) since that is now the profile the printer is using. If I'm using a type of paper that's not in the drop down list usually the "other photo papers" choice seems to work fine. My problem is that I've not had much success have LR manage the color with this printer. I hope this helps.

Use LR to manage print colors, instead of letting the printer driver handle it. You need to select the appropriate printer profile from the Profile popup in LR.

I'd echo the advice to have Lightroom assign the printer profile, and then tell the Epson Printer Color Controls to lay off.  I've attached a shot of that control in Lightroom, after hitting "Print"...  not sure how it will show up, I'm kind of new to posting here.

I also posted a little help video on the YouTube...  for printing out of Photoshop using this same "Application Managed" printing method...  by far more reliable than the Epson drivers.

That is here:
