I've been searching the web to see if I could find some scanned samples of output from the various printers. While its possible to find one or two isolated examples, its impossible to find the sort of detailed comparisons that one can find eg: on the dpreview website for digital camera noise. In my case I would like to see samples from the Epson 3800, 4800 and 4880 etc.

I was going to propose the following.

1) We post sample images for printing. One in colour one in B&W.

Perhaps the printer test image from outback...

And the link to the 40Mb TIFF

2) People with different printers print these samples, at the highest quality setting that their printer can produce.
3) These prints are scanned. We should define the scan area and dpi required.
4) We put up a comparison page showing the differences.

The question is, would anyone else find this interesting? Are there too many variables involved?

My proposal that someone chooses the highest quality setting is very much to create a sort of competition, in showing the best that a printer can produce. We might end up with multiple samples printed from the same manufacturers model but this would be interesting because it would show the variance between different printers and users of printers.

What do people think?

I can supply R2400 and R1800 prints.  I also offer to construct and host the resulting web page, unless someone else has a burning desire to do this. I'll post small samples from the scans not vast quantities of raw data.
