Camera bag for 20D w/ 100-400
« on: March 17, 2005, 11:58:21 am »

You might look at the Lowepro StealthReporter series, I have the 650 and 400. Well made. 650 holds a laptop, but is pretty sizable. 400 is good size for day trips. I carry a 70-200 (big lens) and 17-55 in it with no trouble. Decent strap and top loading systems.

I have the Lowepro backpack too. For my truck, the StealthReporter i.e. top loading bags work well. They fit behind the seat out of sight . I don't need to remove it from the car/truck to get equipment out.

They also offer the model 500. Mid sized between the two.

I purchased a 'Computreker Bag' by Lowepro also, find it very comfortable
and I have filled it with all my gear. I also carry my Uni-Loc Tripod attached to the Compu Bag. Only problem is that I have to remove the tripod to get to my gear-but thats no problem because I use the tripod for most shots anyway. I highly reccomend this bag to anyone.

Can anyone recommend one that has great access to the camera lenses but which still accomodates this kind of personal gear?  I worry about the lenses falling out of the Trekker series, has that happened to anyone here?
Hollie, the current thread here has some very helpful replies on this.

Hi all, my first post here.(But I've been reading MR's stuff for several years.)
I just bought a 20D, and one of the lenses I got was the 100-400 L.  Does anybody have any suggestions about which camera bag will work with this lens?  I have 2 other lenses, the 18-55 and the 28-135, and I will be carrying the bag in my pickup most of the time.
I've been using the old shoulder bag that I bought in the '80s for my old Nikon FE, but it doesn't work very well. ???  Not enough room for lenses....
I've never tried a backpack style, but am open -minded about trying one.  From the pictures I've seen of them, I do worry about things falling out when you open it.
I'd appreciate any help on this.

I also have the Computrekker AW and comfortably fit my 20D, with a hefty 50-500 Sigma attached, and also find plenty of space for my 28-80 canon, 17-35 canon, and 75-300 canon, then there is space for speedlights, remote controls/releases, battery chargers etc. The nifty tripod/monopod holder is also a bonus. In my view, a bag worthy of a top ten spot in any bag ranking. A good buy and you certainly wont go wrong with this one.

Thanks for the  replies.  I've been looking at the Lowepros, but there's so many of them....
I don't live near any store where I can handle these things.  I may have to make a special trip.

I prefer "Toploaders".     I use, both, a Lowepro Topload Zoom AW  ( similar to their S&F Toploader 75 AW), and when I wish to carry additional gear, a Specialist 85 AW.     With either of these "Shoulder / Belt"--combo bags, I can carry a 20D/BG-E2D, with 100-400 L IS lens attached, and ready to shoot.

Works well with a "Grip Strap" ( I use a Zing).

These bags wont take "the" setup with the Canon hood extended, so I use it with a collapsible rubber hood attached, and I haven't experienced any notable flare problems.

Note however, that even the Specialist 85 is somewhat limited to the amount of gear it will hold--- The Camera/100-400 L, and 1-2 smaller lenses, plus a flash is the limit!

Hi, I've read this thread with interest.  I want to buy a rucksack type bag for my camera gear but I also want it to hold typical survival rations in hot weather viz, water and snack to eat, mobile phone, the usual personal gear you need for a day out in the open.  I have a 75-300 lens plus macro and kit lens for the 20D, flash and hoods.  I will probably also be getting ringflash for the macro and extender.

Can anyone recommend one that has great access to the camera lenses but which still accomodates this kind of personal gear?  I worry about the lenses falling out of the Trekker series, has that happened to anyone here?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Thanks Paul, I've looked at the Orion in online shops and the problem I see with it is that the camera gear is at the bottom of the pack and you seem to need to separate the packs before you can get at it.  I want the lenses easy of access and I think that means they should be on top not on the bottom.

I might end up taking the other option you mention and adapting an ordinary rucksack.  It's not something I'd considered really.  Thanks again for your suggestions

I've settled on a crumpler geek-star shoulder bag. The 20D with 100-400 attached goes in the top compartment ready to go and the I can fit a further 3 more standard lenses below and a flashgun. There are also zip pockets for other bits and pieces, memory cards filters etc.

If you want a smaller backpack, the Lowepro Mini Trekker should also carry the 100-400 plus the other two lenses.

Best,

I haven't used this one myself, but you may want to check out Lowepro's Orion Trekker, which is compartmented for camera gear and hiking necessities:

http://www.lowepro.com/Product....II.aspx

Others have recommended that you use a backpack or dayhiking pack and adapt it to photography use.

Hi again...

Ian thanks for the pointer towards Crumpler, their website is awful but I'm not completely put off and I'm going to check their gear on another site

Dan thanks for the pointer to the thread on camera bags ... it is full of different ideas on how to deal with the issue of camera equipment plus personal stuff.  I've only skimmed it so far but will looking at it in more detail pretty soon.

I'm not mountaineering (I wish I was!) but I'm off to Norfolk soon and its my first trip away with my new 20D...can't wait!

Thanks again
