40D with Sigma 500dg-st and 2nd Curtain Flash

I tried to get my sigma 500DG-ST to operate on the second curtain on my 40D yesterday but I couldn't get it to cooperate. There is no option in the Custom Function menu and the Flash Control menu won't open as "flash is incompatible or powered off".
Any ideas?
