Please help with H20
« on: August 13, 2008, 12:26:36 am »

I've got a few days with a Phase One H20. I connected it to an iBook (G4, 800Mhz, 12", OSX 10.4.11, 1.12GB RAM). The green LEDs light up, but the back does not show up in Capture One DB or PRO. I contacted support at Phase One, who promptly emailed me back, asking me to use their portable solution or a repeater.

So I decided to try it with a PC laptop (Pentium M, 1.6 Ghz, Win XP SP2, 1.5GB RAM) for which I have a PCMCIA FireWire card. The card is powered by an external 12V battery. But still no dice.

I have restarted both computers a number of times, started C1 first before connecting the back, connected the back and then started C1, unplugged the back and reconnected. None of these work.

I would appreciate any and all help!

Cheers,
Kumar

hi kumar,

try a different make of 4.5mt firewire cable. It should work fine on the pc laptop if the firewire battery is fully charged. On the mac, i can only say it works with the older powerbook g4 without portable solution.

Hi Sid,

The cable I used works perfectly well with an Eyelike back, as well as with a FireWire hard disk. I'll still try it though. Thanks.

Phase One's portable solution (a battery powered firewire hub) does work, but it is expensive and gives you one more thing to charge throughout the day.

If you have AC power, then you can use any powered firewire hub to give power to the back, I use this one.  I originally bought this to cure the same problem connecting an H25 to the 1st generation of iMacs with the iSight built in.  The previous iMacs had powered the back just fine, but the newer computer made for black pictures.

The great advantage of the P series backs is that they can use power from the battery attached to the back rather than drawing from the computer.  Aside from curing a week FW bus, it can also help your laptop battery to last longer as well since it is not being asked to power the back.

Kumar,

Here is another solution that might help you with your connection of the H20 and your laptop.  It is our Firewire Power Booster.  It's an inexpensive solution that might be get you up and running.

A partial test to check if low firewire power is the issue would be to try the back on a rear firewire port of a Mac Pro or Mac G5 tower.

I would do this before you buy the FW-Power booster or powered hub, although you'll likely want one of these regardless, as the new laptops are a crap shoot for FW-power consistency.

As mentioned above, the P series and P+ series can use the onboard battery whenever you are unsure of the FW-power.

Thanks, everyone.
I got a Firewire card for my PC desktop, and the H20 connected without a problem. The files look good to me, and the square format is rather appealing, after years of shooting 6x9 film and the Betterlight!

I need a little more help.

1. The Firewire card I have for the PC laptop is an IODATA CB1394L. See http://www.iodata.jp/prod/interface/ieee/2004/cb1394l/  Even when the card and the laptop are both connected to the mains, the back does not show up in Capture One, though Windows recognizes it. How do I correct this? If the card works, I'll need a battery to power it. The universal battery I have does not seem to deliver, though it can power the laptop at 19V very well. Any suggestions?

2. I need a Sinar mounting plate for a FlexAdaptor. Does anyone have a used one?

Cheers,
Kumar

I have the exact same firewire card for my laptop. It needs exactly 12v and 1.25a (with correct +ve/-ve polarity). I think the phaseone portable solution used a panasonic battery for their repeater. That battery worked with the firewire card, though not sure and dont have it now. Let me know if u come up with a solution.

Hi, today I recive a H20 back togetter whit a Mamiya RZ, the problen is that the software CD is from 2002, I use a Apple MacBook Pro, so the problem whit the firewire I know how to solve (thanks to yours comments).
I trie in a MacPro and then the 2 green lights look Ok.
But my problen is that the soft do not found the BACK, I mean, I install the soft in the Mac Pro again but I think is too OLD , I use Leopard 10.5, how can I found the last soft?
The other problen is that when I plug all the cables in the right place and I shot,  the flash do not fire, it seens like no kind of comunicacion exist betwen the RZ and the Back, or maybe is all because I use the grong soft?

Sorry for my poor english.
Can anybody help me please?

Thank a Lot

Your problem is NOT the software but the low voltage firewire output of the macpro. The back is not getting enough power to communicate. Get a firewire booster and also install the latest software.

Hi, I did not solve the FW problen,, at last not for now, what I did is plug the FW in a old PowerBook and the H20 is full powered.

The other thing is that whit the Mac Pro Intel core2dual dual if you plug in the FW located in the front panel the C1 do not reconoce the H20, .... well I download the latest version 4.1.2 and plug the FW in the back connector of the MacPro and....... VOILÁ, it works very well and fast,,, BUT
I got 4 lens, 2 RB and 2 RZ, the problem now is that the camera and Back only works whit the RB 90 3.8, the RB 140C, RZ 127 and the Mamiya RZ67 75/4,5 Sekor Shift-Z DID NOT FIRE the flash.. and I dont know WHY, I need to use the 75 and I´m not sure if I have to change something in the lens to make it works,,, when I plug the Sync flahs direct to the lens it works well, but none of the 3 lens work whit the cable sycn plug on the plate of the RZ..

Any suggestion for this problem???

Thanks in Advance.

With the 75mm shift lens, can you take a picture without flash? Might be best to talk to Phase One support. They usually answer in a few hours.
