Hacking Macs
« on: August 12, 2008, 03:50:49 pm »

This isn't related to photography but many people use Macs for post-processing and other work.  Anyone with a Windows-based machine and an ounce of intelligence has antivirus software - so far Macs have been pretty much immune but that might be changing.

I had a Win98 laptop with NO virus protection on the Web 12 hours per day from late 1998 to early 2005, and it was never attacked or compromised in any way.  When I replaced it with WinXP it was killed in approx. one minute.  I've explained this to deaf ears a thousand times.  (Here's the secret: WinXP, like newspapers, mags and TV, was designed for maximum vulnerability from the ground up, to deliver the maximum advertising to you, the lucky consumer.)  I can't give you the tech details in this space, but I've been working with this stuff since 1975, so it's no surprise to me.  All I can say is, when Apple starts promoting "more security", look out.

99% sure that the good folks at Norton are behind that story...

Cheers,

If you read 2600 (the people behind Defcon), you'll see why Macs haven't been targets, and it's not because of the 10 pct. market share, nor because of or in spite of Norton or anyone else.  It's because hackers like hacking into corporations like the phone co., Walmart, etc., and also schools and the lesser-paranoid govt. agencies.  And almost all business/govt. networks use PC's. Good hacking tools and skills are hard to come by, and those who are good are not going to waste time on Macs, until the tools and skills can port across with little effort.
