Phase live preview function with Contax 645?
« on: August 11, 2008, 09:06:04 pm »

Is this possible? This is from Vistek's website and seems to suggest the Contax 645 is not compatible with Live Preview:

Camera house support
Following camera houses support Live Preview functionality:
- Hasselblad V series, Hasselblad H series
- Mamiya RZ 67 Pro II, Mamiya AFD
- Technical cameras (4x5): Arca Swiss, Cambo 4x5, Rollei Xact, Linhof M679/4x5, Toyo, Sinar, Plaubel and Horseman.
- Wide angle: Horseman SWD, Cambo Wide DS and a range of adapters with 35 mm support.

I can do live preview on my Contax with any other brand - I just put it in Bulb mode and use a lockable shutter release cable...... can a Phase dealer or user clear this up? It would influence my decision in buying a Phase back in the future.

Found this on Phase's website: http://www.phaseone.com/HOME/Content/Suppo...Site%20-%20Main

Contax instructions are listed at the bottom so it must be supported.

I am using P45+ on Contax 645 and the LV works, although personally I don't find the LV on Phase back much useful anyway.

I don't expect the quality to be fantastic, but it's just a tool for composition and fine focussing for me. I currently only use it on my Precision back when I'm using my P2 and need to nail the focus, or when I'm doing a big overhead shot so the stylist and I can see where we are putting things when we compose a shot.

Here is another solution that might be able to help you with your Contax.  It connects to any Phase One P or P+ back in the 8 pin multi-port.  It basically tricks the DB to allow you to do multiple pops or exposures.

That's a great thing. I haven't used multi pop exposures since shooting cookbook covers on 5x4 film ten years ago! But it's good to know it can be done now with digital. I think this is a feature that could probably easily be written into the capture software of any back, but I suppose if you're not shooting tethered you would need a hardware way of doing it.
