Gold Fibre Silk on epson 2100 problems
« on: August 01, 2008, 09:33:32 pm »

Hi, today i bought this Ilford paper and, following the istructions that i found on the Ilford site (In Adobe Photoshop® CS3 go to the “Print” window, select “Color Management” and
“Photoshop Manages Colors” in the “Color Handling” field. Choose the correct profile in the
“Printer Profile” field and set the “Rendering Intent:” to “Relative Colorimetric”, then press
“Print…” - the paper i had to select was :Premium Semigloss Photo Paper and no color managment on the epson driver)
Ok i did everything and i obtained terrible pink prints of a BW picture that on the Epson Archivial matte paper looks perfect.
What did i do wrong?
Thanks a lot

Hi!

I had a problem with pink Ilford profiles on my Canon i9950. In the end i got Colorvision Printfix Pro and built my own profiles. My own profiles were much better (not pink!). Now I use the Color Munki. Printfix Pro game me 'warm or brownish' BW-prints. ColorMunki is neutral to my eyes. Other than that I cannot see any big difference between Colorvision Printfix Pro och ColorMunki, by naked eye. Some more with profile analyzing tools.

Your workflow description seems correct to me.

Erik

Magenta cast often means double color management. Do you use a Mac or a PC? Everything seems correct (Photohop manages color, Print Color Management OFF, correct printer profile and correct rendering intent).

Massimo,
I'm using a Mac and there's some issue with the latest OS and 2100 printers. Unfortunately, I'm not up-to-date on Windows/Epson printers matters. Have you tried something like QImage?

If your main concern is BW prints, then I strongly recommend the QuadTone RIP, which works just great on my Epson 2200 (= the U.S. 2100). It is available from www.quadtonerip.com and costs U.S. $50 as shareware. Many LL members use it. Doing a search on the forum for "QTR" should turn up several relevant threads.

It doesn't yet come with built-in curves for GFS, but I have gotten good results using the PK ink and Photo Paper settings, with "UCpk-MCeramicLuster-cool" for curve 1 and "UCpk-MCeramicLuster-warm" for curve 2 (blend to taste). My best results have come with Ink Limit set to 25 (fairly dark) and Gamma set to -15 (very light). Using the curves this way doesn't allow for soft proofing in PhotoShop, but I have learned what kind of screen image gives a good print.

QTR also comes with software for creating ICC profiles, which would allow soft-proofing, but I haven't doen that yet.

I hope this helps.

By the way, QTR gives me much more neutral BW prints than the expensive ImagePrint RIP, which I use for color.

I haven't had that kind of problem, so I'm not sure what to try. Here are a couple of possibilities:

First, try single test prints using different "curves" from the ones provided. There isn't a curve specifically for Ilford Gold Fibre Silk, so you need to try other curves. Be sure to stay with ones that mention "pk" as part of the name, so they are using the PK (Photo Black) ink. Be sure you have the PK ink installed in the printer, and have "Photo Paper" selected under "Media Type".

If you try, for example, "UCpk-MCeramicLuster-cool" alone, it should give a cool, or bluish print, while "UCpk-MCeramicLuster-warm should give a warm or reddish print. If that is the case, you can set one of those as "curve 1" and the other as "curve 2", and adjust the sliders for "Highlights", "Midtones", and "Shadows" to mix the two curves. I would start with all three set to 50 for each, and then slide them up and down a bit on additional prints until you get a print that looks neutral.

If that doesn't work, try posting some questions on the  [a href=\"http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/]Yahoo QTR group here[/url] .

I hope this helps.
