Aussie Visit in Nov / Dec 08
« on: August 01, 2008, 09:44:34 am »

Gday to one and all.
I have been watching the forum and have loved the suggestions you guys have offered visiting photographers.
Myself and two friends are visiting your shores in late Nov 2008
Our first stop will be in Orlando - we will be there for a week, about the 14th Nov onwards.
Any suggestions on locations that are a must see would be greatly appreciated.

From there we are heading up to Louisville for about 3 days.

And from there over to Vegas for two days. (We have to see it.)

And last but not least we then have about 9 days to go where-ever,  we thought maybe a drive fron San Fancisco down to San Diego ?
Then back to LA for the flight home.

But in all honesty we are really open to suggestions here - we can go anywhere - its not set out yet.

If anyone has some great shots to share and some experience as to where in the States would make for some inspiring landscapes at this time of year  - please share.

I am researching locations now and using Google Earth / this forum for ideas.

Cheers.

You might want to edit the title of this thread to get more responses: I looked at the title and assumed you were going to ask about a visit *to* Australia.  It was only when I got to your mention of Orlando that I thought something funny was going on.

If the title mentioned that you were visiting the U.S.A. that would make more sense...

Vegas fly to Fresno, rent car and drive to Yosemite. Stay as long as you can and then drive to SF (4-5 hours)

Another vote for that one, but if you like scenic coastline then add a day or two at the end to visit the coast around the Monterey Peninsula (including Point Lobos) & Big Sur while you're near San Fran.  The whole drive farther down the coast is OK, but not really worth the time if you've already seen some of the better bits in the area I just mentioned.

Another thought...

If you're in Las Vegas, it's not too far to drive to Bryce Canyon National Park & Zion National Park.  Both are very scenic and bizarre in their own ways, and very popular with western photographers.  While Bryce can get snow in the winter (because it's at pretty high elevation), November might be before the real snow starts, and they keep at least part of the park open and plowed anyway.  There's virtually no snow in Zion.

I'd recommend the North Rim of the Grand Canyon too, but I'd guess it would be closed for the winter already in November.  The South Rim, which is more popular and open all year, is a *much* longer drive from Las Vegas (because there's a large canyon in the way    ), but if you feel like a lot of driving, the Grand Canyon is a wondrous thing unlike anywhere else in the world.  Or you can check into the availability short-haul flights from LV to somewhere near the South Rim, or even just a several-hour tourist flight in a small plane from LV to overfly the canyon (I'm not personally familiar with any, but I'm pretty sure you'd find some if you research it).

Frankly, IMHO, any of these will be more interesting than the California coast (scenic though it is).  It's different, though.  You might look at photos from all these places and see what grabs your attention the most.

Thanks Lisa - I will absolutely have a look around Vegas and the Canyon if we get out there.

At this moment I have been advised we are flying into Phoenix and driving to Vegas - so with any luck there will be some good shots to be had along the way.
Even if we have to go off the road a way.

Then we are driving to Yosemite - yeah  - from Vegas !

As well as driving from Orlando up to Louisville.

PS - Love the pics on your website  - have given me some new ideas.

If you're driving from Phoenix to Las Vegas, then the south rim of the Grand Canyon is a convenient side trip; definitely don't miss it!  Sedona is also on the way from Phoenix to the canyon, and worth a stop ("red rock country", where many old western movies were filmed).  Distances aren't short, however, so check something like mapquest.com to get driving times, and be sure to allow plenty of time to actually see the sights.  You could spend many days at each of the parks and not run out of things to do.

On the Vegas to Yosemite route, there's something you need to know.  The route up highway 395 on the east side of the Sierras, which is the most efficient way from Vegas to Yosemite during summer, is incredibly scenic - but the roads across the Sierras near Yosemite close for the winter after the first major snowfall.  Late November they could still be open, but there's a reasonable chance they'll already be closed.  Once that happens, I don't think there's any way across the Sierras between Lake Isabella in the south and Lake Tahoe in the north until late spring or early summer (see a California map for details).  And even the roads across near Tahoe need tire chains or snow tires when there's been recent snow.  The alternative is to drive around the south end of the Sierras and do the very boring drive up the central valley, and drive into Yosemite Valley from the west side.

Another warning...
November 27 is the Thanksgiving holiday here.  That week,  all tourist areas, especially those that appeal to families, will be extremely crowded.  For your sake, I hope your "late November" trip ends before that week.  A few years back, I went to Las Vegas for the Thanksgiving long weekend, and the place was quite unusually crowded (but not unbearable).  Also, interstate highway 5 up the central valley (on the western route between Las Vegas & Yosemite) is one big traffic jam the Sunday after Thanksgiving (I made the mistake of doing that once about a decade ago).  Once you get to the San Fran area (if that's still on your itinerary), I don't expect it would be too bad that week, though (though I could be wrong - has anyone here been a tourist around SF during Thanksgiving week???).

I'm glad my photos are being useful to someone.      If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks Lisa  - that's AWESOME - that's the sort of info that saves a trip.
And we dont end up wasting time where we could be shooting a sunset etc  instead of stuck in traffic.

We will be modifying our trip and heading North to Vegas Via the South rim.

Cheers and thanks again.

P.S - keep up the great shots.

Well if it were me then I'd skip Orlando completely   ...

If you're in the Vegas area and heading to CA then you could do Death Valley rather than the Yosemite trek, or perhaps on the way. Lot's to see there.

If you're driving across from Phoenix/Sedona/Flagstaff & Grand Canyon then be sure to get off rt 40 and take the old Rt 66 across to Kingman. A lot of the more iconic Rt 66 scenery is west of kingman unfortunately but Seligman to Kingman is worth a side detour.
