Lightroom 2.0 Books
« on: July 30, 2008, 10:05:32 am »

I'm considering getting one of three Lightroom 2.0 books to help supplement the tutorials on this site.  Of my three choices - The Kelby book, the Evening Book, or the Queen's book - which would you say would be the most informative?

I realize that these are 'new' and that you likely have not read any of them.  So, based on their past published material which would you lean towards for info on Lr2?

Based on their books for LR1, I'd go with Martin Evening's book for LR2.  IMHO it was head and shoulders better than all the others for LR1.  I haven't seen his LR2 book yet but based on owning his LR1 and PS CS3 books he's my first choice.

Well actually, I have an advance copy of Martin's Lightroom 2 Book and I have read through it...it's quite advanced over the previous book (about 625 pages for the new book and 350 pages for the 1.0 book) and the material in the 2.0 book is pretty much a total rewrite...so I would be inclined to suggest this book (note: I have NOT read Scott's yet and Martin is a friend).

Course, if you want to learn LR 2, you might also consider Mike and my LR 2 video tutorial...

I'm pretty much non-biased (don't know any of them LOL), but--I do have Martin's first book and really like it--and plan to buy his 2.0 book as a reference.

However, I became a convert to LR from the first LL video series (after getting LR free as an RSP licensee and having tried the beta but drifted back to PS when PSCS3 came out).

I first watched the Camera to Print series--and noticed how much Michael and Jeff used LR and it made me reconsider LR.  So---I bought the REALLY reasonably priced LR 1.0 series and became an LR convert (moved from another database, etc. to LR).

I dled the 2.0 beta but admittedly didn't spend as much time with it as I had hoped, so wasn't really 'up' on the new features.  I've now watched the videos through the 'calibration in Develop module' video and have a MUCH better grasp of all that's new (and can say that a newbie to Lightroom will 'get it' also) and can highy recommend it.  The video on the filters in Library module were just excellent as well as the new features in the Develop module (very well demoed).  I also loved the calibration video explaining the new profiles and dng editor and just downloaded and installed the profiles (wow).  I had read about them yesterday but was still unclear about how to actually use them or get them--but that's all explained and much much more.  Worth every penny IMO.

I was using LR about 80/20 but wonder now if that will increase quite a bit with the new features.

I have checked out Amazon for the books on Lightroom 2. The books by Kelby and Martin are set be released in January '09. Other authors set for Oct. '08. You can pre-order. I haven't checked out their individual sites.

Mr. Schewe,  Of course I got video tutorial.   I have promised myself to watch it from start to finish before I revisit my images.   My gut is telling me that there is a specific workflow that I should follow as it relates to converting raw images to DNG prior to using the develop module.  Besides, who could pass up an opportunity to watch the two of you for 8 hours.

Mine's a very different style to Scott & Martin's Adam - I wouldn't attempt to compete with them!!!

Adobe Lightroom - The Missing FAQ (the Queen's book you were referring to!) is a compilation of the real questions that people have actually been asking on the forums, and the questions that they will ask about 2.0.

You can sit down and read it cover to cover, but it's particularly designed to be used as a reference book, as a compliment to Scott & Martin's books, or for people who prefer to dive straight into software and figure it out as they go along.  And of course it's available TODAY!

With the exception of Seth Resnick's Lightroom Workflow book (which is finished but not printed and not due till actually in Oct) both Martin's and Scott's books are done and ready to ship. The fact that Amazon STILL lists the dates so far out is Amazon's fault...the books are done and ready to ship to distributors now. See: [a href=\"http://lightroom-news.com/2008/07/29/martin-evenings-lightroom-2-book/]Martin Evening's Lightroom 2 Book[/url]. That's the REAL book he's holding, not a mockup. And I've read through it already. But Like I said I don't have Scott's book yet. However, both are due to be shipping about now.

Ms. Bampton, my apologies for not using your name.  My problem is with my eyes, they keep drifting to the picture of you; all else goes blank at that moment.

BTW, great forum you have over there.  I read it every day.

ETA.  At least drop the formality - Victoria is fine Adam!

I'm new in this forum, so I don't know if my msg is even going to the right place, but...does anyone know if Rob Sheppard is planning to come out with a LR2 book?  I've read parts of his LR1 book and liked it very much.  If not, I also liked what I saw of the Evening book.  All replies are appreciated.

Another recommendation for Martin Evening's book from me.

It's not scheduled for release in the UK until August the 28th but is available as a legal, DRMd download from PeachPit and will require the use of the Adobe Digital Editions software.

Like Martin's book(s) on Photoshop he takes a real world approach and puts the functionality in context rather than producing a rather dry technical guide.

Amazon are already shipping it in the UK - my copy arrived this morning (and yes, I do buy other people's LR books as well as writing them!)

I too ordered the Martin Evening book from amazon.co.uk (amazon.de still does not have it in stock). should arrive soon.

Beside this, I will get the book by Scott Kelby and I already have Victoria's FAQ which is just awesome and I highly recommend it.

Beside this, I have the Video Tutorial from Michael and Jeff which I also highly recommend. It's just awesome. (I hope to publish a review on my website by the end of next week when I am completely finished with it).
