Resetting H1 battery grip
« on: July 26, 2008, 11:03:30 am »

I have a Hasselblad 9.6Volt batterygrip (the old 750mAh) which has stopped responding to charging. I remember there was some sort of procedure for "resetting" it, but i cant remember where I read it. Tried searching here and on Google with little result.

Any one know something more about this?

1. Make sure the battery grip is "completely" charged (ie. having been
on the charger until the light is blinking red)

2. Make sure you take off the digital back, viewfinder and lens first

3. Hold the Menu and Flash buttons down BEFORE attaching the battery.

4. Install the battery while continuing to hold the aforementioned buttons until the camera
beeps repeatedly.

This should reset the PMU on the battery grip. Power the camera down, and turn it back on
as usual. You can now (re)charge the battery as you normally would.

Wow. That's priceless information. I almost wanted to try to open up my grip. Thanks a lot. I'll try too.

You mean blinking *green* right? My LED is green, it never turns red as far as I now. I never had a user manual, but does *not blinking* means "charging", and blinking "full"?

Well, I tried to reset the PMU as explained but alas no luck.... my problem was that the battery didn't fully recharge anymore. After recharging (about 4 hours), the battery indicator on the H1 LCD was still "low", and the camera died after 10 shots or so. I guessed the cells were just dead. In the end, I opened the grip. It's easy, just open up from the top with a small flat screwdriver. Inside, I saw the battery is made up of 8 sanyo nimh cells (1.2V, 850mAh). They are a tiny bit longer than AAA (seems to be called 5/4AAA) but I guess AAA will fit equally. I will replace them with standard AAA and fill up the empty space with foam or so. I saw some 1100mAH ones in the store, or I might put in the newer low-discharge types (like Sanyo ENELOOPs) but they are only 800mAh.

Yes! I replaced the cells with Eneloop equivalents (Ansmann 800mAH MaxE). Costed me 40CHF, that's about less than 25 euro/usd. I ended up deciding for the Eneloops because this way, even if I don't use the H1 for weeks, because of the low discharge, I have my H1 always ready for unexpected jobs. I still have a spare one with original cells. I won't win a prize for clean soldering I guess... but hey it works. Charging only took 15 minutes (because Eneloops are almost full when you buy  ). No problems it seems. As new. I am happy camper now...
