My R2880 arrived Germany / (Mini-Review)+QUESTIONS
« on: July 11, 2008, 01:54:20 pm »

The R2880 has arrived today form Germany to Sweden.
It was not in stock so I had to wait for 2 weeks.

(I use Ps-SC3 and print from Illustrator C3 with profiles.
My color-space is ADOBE RGB set to Gamma 1.5.
And print on Matte Heavyweight paper. I have Archival
Matte Paper on order so I can compare it to the Heavyweight Matte.)

I have been thinking of turning to "pirate ink" with this printer.
(se my recent post: Printer + pirate-INK suggestion)
But I hesitate to fill this "Maserati" up with "yak urine".

----------------------------------------------------------------

I am upgrading from Epson 1280 to R2880.

The first test-image (with R2880) was from a little swedish church
(my youngest daughter's confirmation now in May 2008)
with very deep shadows in the ceiling.

The Gradation difference in these shadows compared to the 1280 is really HUGE
(YES really HUGE Indeed).

However, I think the 1280 was (and still is) a very good printer.
But The R2880 is marvelous !
(And I print many deep shadows on matte paper.)

--- But - Wait - There - Is - More ---

The only thing that was not so good (compared to the 1280 print)
was that it seem a little bit held back in the highlights.

There are some small windows in the ceilings region of this church
and they were not as bright as in the 1280-print where they seem to
be just about burned out.

I went in to Ps-CS3 and checked the values. I thought they must be about
(255,255,255) because it looked that way in the 1280-print.

But they were all below (240,240,240).

It seems like the 1280 is printing things way to WHITE.
So I went back into Ps-CS3 and corrected the windows-highlights to
(255,255,255).

Time for my second (9x13.7cm) test print.

The highlights are of course brigther than in the first test-print but
still not a bright as in the 1280-print.

The 1280 printer seems to burn out highlights totally.

I still like my old 1280 printer (on my favorite Matte Heavyweight Paper)
but The Epson R2880 is just tremendous.

I may even use this printer in B/W-mode.
(I have a Toyo field 8x10" camera for that.)

But B/W is harder and much deeper (and better). So probably not.
(I'm just not that good.)

END mini-review.

---------------------------------------------------
QUESTION1:

There is a "Paper config..." option in the printer driver.
What is this ?

---------------------------------------------------
QUESTION2:

Shall I turn the R2880 off ?

---------------------------------------------------
QUESTION3:

If I put the old 1280 away. Can I start printing with it again later on
or will it then has clogged to death.
(Clogging was the big problem with this printer. Otherwise I really liked it.
Just the black ink.)

---------------------------------------------------
QUESTION4:

This "print head alignment thing"
shall I test this even if the image looks good ?
( I never did that with the 1280.)

QUESTION1:

What is this ?

For setting customization such as the color density (amount of ink put down) and the Platen Gap (distance between paper and print head), mostly intended to be used when printing on non-Epson papers.

QUESTION2:

Shall I turn the R2880 off ?

My suggestion: if the longest time between two successive prints is longer than a couple of days, turn it off. Otherwise, leave it on.

Sorry, hard to tell. Depends a lot on environmental conditions and your particular unit.

Doesn't hurt to run an auto head alignment. I would do so. Just requires a sheet of paper.
