8-ply archival mat board
« on: July 07, 2008, 11:14:40 am »

Does anyone know where I can order 8-ply archival mat board?  I have checked many of the recognized online sites (e.g. AmericanFrame, Light Impressions, etc.) and very few seem to offer 32"x40" 8-ply board at a reasonable price (including shipping) even if I order 15-20 sheets.

I am not sure where you can buy it online, but be aware that a full box of 20 sheets of 32x40" 8-ply mat board will need to be shipped via freight, and will likely cost around $100 for shipping, perhaps a little less. I think the box should weigh around 75 pounds!

I buy 8-ply archival mat board from FrameDestination. Their site is... well... it sucks, but the people are very nice, and if you have questions or difficulties with the site you can call them. I have ordered many items from them and they are very accommodating. I buy standard size mats and frames, as well as custom kits from them and they do a great job. Customer service has been great.

You may want to call them and ask them where the quantity breaks will best serve you needs.

Thank you both.  I'm aware that shipping may be expensive.  I'll try to call "framedestination".

Mike,

I try to avoid small orders to help keep shipping costs down (per piece). FrameDestination has price breaks on mat board at 4 pcs, 10 pcs, 25 pcs, and 50 pcs I believe. You can get an approximation by plugging the amounts into a component order. But talking with Mark will probably be smartest as he'll guide you to the cheapest way to arrange it.

Their shipping charges are fair. I've not ordered as large as you are discussing, but I have ordered many frame sets (complete with mats, backing board, glazing, etc.) at 24x32 or so, as well as bulk mats and the shipping has always been reasonable.

Just remember that mats are mostly labor, in terms of cost (even though they are computer measured and cut), so the more you order the cheaper they are.

Cheers,

Dale
