Epson 3800 under VMWare Fusion
« on: June 28, 2008, 12:13:38 pm »

Hi,

I have a Mac Pro running Leopard, an Epson 3800 and Fusion running XP Pro. I'd like to try QImage, but I can't get the XP system to see the printer.

It's connected via Ethernet (cable straight from the Mac to the printer). It works fine directly from the Mac. I've downloaded the latest Windows driver from the Epson site and installed it. I have networking mode set to Bridged in the Fusion preferences, as advised in Fusion's help. I can get at the Net from within Fusion (that is, Explorer works fine).

I've tried both ordinary installation (Add a Printer) and Bonjour, after installing Bonjour for Windows. No luck.

Has anyone managed to get this to work? Any tips gratefully received.

Jeremy

PS: I hate Windows!

In case anyone is interested...

The solution is:

1. Install Bonjour for Windows.

2. Set network mode to Bridged.

3. Enable printer sharing on the Mac.

4. Run the Bonjour wizard.

The rest is easy. It was step 3 that I'd missed and that no documentation mentioned, apart from VMWare's tutorial videos. They're very good.

Now I'm wrestling with QImage. Hell of a UI.

I don't know because I've not used it, but I would imagine so. In my hacking around the Net, I came across a comment that Parallels implements networking in a way that's easier to use than Fusion's choice, but the comment was over a year old so it may be out of date.

When I read that comment, I did feel a flash of regret that my coin-toss had come down in favour of Fusion. It's gone now.
