Lightroom Archiving
« on: June 27, 2008, 12:58:34 pm »

I have searched this forum and have not quite been able to find what I need.

Baically I would like to use lightroom to create a catalog for each one of my clients retaining the previews and metadata and have the original image stored offline. Then when I call on the file to develop or rework lightroom should ask me to insert the relevant disk to which it allowed a name to be assigned at the time of archiving.

This can be done in Extensis Portfolio but it would be nice if current or beta Lightroom releases could handle the cataloging. Does anyone know if this can be done in the current release of Lightroom or the beta release?

LR won't prompt you but it does let you know the file is offline. Offline folders appear in red. Also, if you click on the icon in the upper right of the thumbnail LR will show you the last location of the file which would let you know which volume to mount. Not as efficient as a prompt but the information is there.

What I've done is bring in a DVD, highlight all of the images and then make them into a Collection and give the collection a name.  It can be something as simple as "disk1," "disk 2," etc. Keyword the images. If these are for clients, use keywords that will identify the client.  I also keep all of these offline images in a separate catalog, named "offline."
