Will LR ever print correctl on the new Mac
« on: June 24, 2008, 03:34:08 am »

Well I'm pretty disappointed that having bought a new eight core Mac Pro, largely for the processing speed with Lightroom, that I still can't make a print to my Epson 2400 except in certain limited circumstances.

I still can't really understand who the culprit is. Is it Apple with Leopard?  Is it Epson not correctly supporting Leopard with correct drivers? Is it Adobe with their design of the Print Module in Lightroom?

Are they blaming each other?

Is that why in the middle of 2008 one can't simply buy a new Mac, a new Epson 2400 printer and LR and expect to make an accurate print?

The workarounds either are unreasonable (uninstall Leopard and install Tiger - on a new machine?), or fiddle around in the innards of Colorsync (doesn't seem to work). Or only print on glossy paper... seems to work for some indefinable reason...

Has anyone found a proper solution to this yet?

Are you sure you have the latest drivers? I have an 8-core Mac Pro and can print to my Epson printer (admittedly a 3800, not a 2400) from Lightroom with no difficulty.

I think there's a new(ish) driver at epson.co.uk. I downloaded it when I got my 3800 a month or two ago.

I read your post a couple of times, and other than saying you "can't" do it, I see nothing to describe what you can't do. Does it just not print, print the wrong size, print it upside down?

I also have no problems printing from LR to a 3800 with an 8 core Mac.

v. 6.12 is the latest driver for the 2400 listed for Mac Intel on the Epson site.

Yes sorry I do have the latest driver.

My problem is as follows.  When printing from Lightroom, there seems to be a problem choosing a custom printing profile. These are my printing steps.

eg:

1) Select a custom profile from the Print Job pane, eg: SPR 2400 Photo Qlty IJP

2)  I open the "print settings" dialog from the button in LR.

3)  I select the 'color matching' option which shows that ColorSync and Epson Color Controls are greyed out (due to the photo quality IJP custom profile selection I expect)

4) I select 'Print Settings'

5) My settings are for standard plain paper, with Colour Settings set to 'Off (No Color Adjustment)
Mode is Automatic

6) If you click of the advanced color settings option the screen reads

"Selected Media Type : Plain Paper"
"Appropriate ColorSync Profile: SPR2400 Standard"

>>>>  If I make a print at this point, it is supersaturated and extremely bright.

From this I conclude that my custom profile is not being used. I suspect that the 'SPR2400 Standard' profile is being used instead, though I am not certain about this.

I can make prints so long as I choose something like Premium Glossy, where coincidentally the Appropriate ColorSync profile matches my paper... even though my custom profile is being used.

This is what I suspect is happening, but I"m not certain.

Certainly my custom profile is not being used.

Is this a bug in Leopard (others think so) or in Epsons driver (It was last updated in December)

I don't know... I do know that custom profiles are currently dead on this machine.

Those of you with 3800's may not be seeing this problem as you probably have the more upto date drivers for Leopard as 3800 and up have a different driver download page because of the higher bit width drivers.

PS: Irritatingly my R1800 seems to work correctly, the Print Settings dialog is arranged differently and more simply.  So its only my best printer which does not seem to work.

You print on Sihl IJP Photo Glossy so it isn't plain paper. You should try with "Premium Luster Photo Paper" or maybbe "Premium Glossy" as media type in the printer driver.Ch

Check out this pdf from digitaldog:

http://www.digitaldog.net/files/Epson_Driver_Leopard.pdf

The printer driver dialogue should be fairly similar for the 2400.

Well, I print on a 3800 from OS 10.5 on a PowerMac. Good results so far.

Hope that helps

Make sure you have the latest Lightroom update too. When I first started using Leopard, LR had a printing problem where it seemed to be applying the profile twice or something. I went through all of the updating of Epson drivers to no avail (plus I could print fine from other apps, like Photoshop). But once they released LR 1.4.1 all was OK.

BTW, the profile had was just for the photo quality inkjet paper, so its for a standard matt paper, not for a glossy selection.

I get a similar mismatch if I choose any profile that doesn't simply match an obvious Epson paper type.

I've even got LR 1.4.1, its most perplexing. I think the only solution is to only use the standard paper types and the canned profiles, then it will probably work.

There is definitely something weird going on because in the color settings part of the print dialog I some times get the colorsync/epson radio buttons enabled, sometimes greyed out and there doesn't seem to be any obvious rule about which will apply

Two Adobe links for leopard/Epson printer problems....Maybe useful?

Thanks for these, I did see them before but to me they just confirm my opening moan. This kind of procrustean work around shouldnt be necessary... currently there is no straightforward solution to printing with the R2400, Mac OS X 10.2.5 and Lightroom.

The main proper fixes (apart from tricky profile substitutions in the ColorSync utility) seem to be

1) Buy another printer such as the 3800 which has a working driver.
2) Downgrade to Leopard

I consider these both pretty extreme options when things were working perfectly well on the PC.

Yes, sorry I meant downgrade from Leopard to an older OS.

I've worked out why I can't print on Matt media, its because I have the Photo Black cartridge loaded.  I used to be able to do this before because the driver didn't force the correct media types. I used to get some OK quick scratch prints without swapping cartridges. Now this isn't possible because the driver only presents media types consistent with the currently loaded ink set.

The R1800 is of course, loaded with both MK and PK carts all the time, so a fuller set of media options is available.

I'm still left with the trick of having to use the colorsync utility to manually map a built in profile to a custom profile. I'll have to make a new profile and check that this is working correctly.
