Effects of Differing printer inksets - Epson?
« on: June 11, 2008, 06:04:03 pm »

I notivce that the 4880 has vivid magenta  ( like the new 2880) and vivid other colours

Prsumably as these have been added to the new 2880, they will also come to the 3800? I assume the differences would be noticable - any thoughts , expertise, experience on this?

e.g.

Epson never supplied a more recent inkset for an older printer since the wide format 9000 - 9500 - 10000 -10600 generation. In that case it was a change from dye to pigment and parts of the printer where exchanged as well. It had its price too. One other example is for the same generation and US only where carts of a newer and better light resisting dye could be ordered for the 9000 and 7000 replacing the yellow and magenta carts of the older dye. The customer response was minimal so that project was ended as well.

Don't count on a change like that for desktop models. It didn't happen in wide formats for a long time either and even when two Epson ink types existed for the same models Epson wasn't willing to help in the transfer.

The VM inkset could have been folded into the older X800 printers but instead they brought out a new line. The newer models also bring improved screening as well as a few other things. Also just to clear things up there is no vivid yellow, that must have been a typo. The vivid magenta is the only update in the inkset everything else is Ultrachrome K3. The ink tweak offers noticeable improvements but is not worth upgrading to just on that fact alone if your a photographer. Perhaps a 3880 at some point but they are not going to give you the new technology without getting you to lay down the money for a new printer.

I understand the Vivid inks will trash the print heads on the older, non-coated, machines like the 7800 and 3800.

I did load the K3 ink set in my K2 machine, an Epson 7600. No problems, but no LLK channel either.

Not 100% sure I believe it, but not worth trying for the small gain in gamut.

Yes, to get the x880 ink set you will need to wait for a 3880. Or wherever they are going to go, they have a newer ink set than the Vivid with the 7900/9900. Doubtful they will bring that down to the smaller machines though.

Best,
Michael
