Taking Epsons abroad
« on: June 11, 2008, 06:45:13 am »

I intend to buy either the 2880 or the 3800 but am also thinking of moving abroad (Europe) in the next year (or so) - will a printer bought in the UK still work abroad? i.e. are there adapters readily available or is it a convoluted process

Power requirements are the same all over Europe - 220-240V AC I think? All you might need is a plug adapter.

More importantly, you need to check whether the cartridges bought in Europe will work with your UK model printer. AFAIK, US cartridges will not work with Japanese versions. But maybe UK vs. Europe might not be a problem.

Cheers,
Kumar

You need only change the power plug, standard plug config for localisations are cheap.

The cartridges are the same in Europe, although the packaging slightly different in certain countries besides the languages.

I thought the rest of Europe was on 110 volts?

The Epson 7800 Spec suggests AC voltage of 110 or 220-240 and Hz (cycles per second) of 50 to 60.

So you should be fine, you just need to check that you don't have to switch it manualy. Most equipment runs on voltages a lot lower than 110v and has a solid state voltage regulator that will drop the voltage from about 260 down to 90 odd volts to the required voltage that the eqipment runs on. The Hz is sorted in much the same way.

Just checked the 3800 and 2880 and they are rated at 120 volts only but at 50 to 60 Hz. This is on the US site though.

OK thanks - I tried the Epson site but couldn't find this specific info

Completely lost on the fog comments  - is it an 'in' joke or something?

Go to the printer that you are looking to buy. Find the Specification sheet, or detailed spec sheet. Near the end, possibly with the diamentions and weight should be a set of figures under Electrical Requirements, Rated voltage.

In the UK the voltage is 220/240 @ 50Hz, in the USA it is 110v @ 60Hz. I am not sure of the voltage or Hz in all of Europe but most Countries I think are 110/120, you should be able to find out with a Google search for the countries you are going to.

I'm pretty sure that all of Europe is 220v 50hz. So, even though the plugs change, the power is the same.
