In the market for a new Printer
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:22:36 pm »

I am in the market now for a new printer - been VERY happy with the Canon Pixma Pro9500 - but I need now to print larger - up to 24"

Any suggestions / reccomendations?
Was considering the Canon IPF5100 - but there have been quite a few models from Epson and HP since its release.

The 5100 is not a 24 inch printer.  You need the 6100 for that.

And there have not been "quite a few" models released from either Epson or HP since the 6100 came out.

And your budget is too low to get into a 24" printer from ANY manufacturer that I know of (with a pigment printer at least).

All large format printer lines are just "larger versions" of each other.  The normal progression is 17", 24", 44", 60" etc.  Each being a larger version of the last.

If you're happy with your Pro9500, the imagePROGRAF 5100 uses a larger set of the Canon LUCIA inks you're used to, and the drivers should be reasonably familiar.

You could also go with the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 or 4880.

...And that's the 17"/A2 market in a nutshell.

If you have issues with size and space, as I did, the 3880 may be your best bet.

I have an iPF5000 that is virtually unused with a full set of inks for sale. See the post in the "For Sale" section. The only big difference between the 5000 and the 5100 is the black inks. You can use the new inks with a slight modification of the carts.
The new inks cost over $800.00.
Depending on where you are located shipping costs will be around $175.00 in the US.

Best Regards,
Greg.....

Thanks - I am in Australia - so I think shipping would be prohibitive.

Now that I would not be hurting a sale all reviews I have read strongly prefer the 5100 over the 5000 . Both from the ink and the mechanics . Just for your info . David PS epsons are ink killers
