Z3100 canvas printing black ink performance
« on: May 29, 2008, 10:55:35 am »

Hi

I've just started printing from our 24" Z3100 onto HP Professional Matte canvas material. I've noticed when printing large areas of black that in places the print can look slightly smudged as if someone has lightly marked it with a finger.

I'm not sure if this is to do with the application of ink or whether it's an inconsistency with the paper.

Can anyone shine any light on this particular problem I'm having?

Thanks

Andy

If you even just barely touch the dark areas, you will see a lighter looking "smudge". However, it's been my experience that after the canvas has been finished with an acrylic gicleƩ coating, the marks disappear. If you can manage, guide the print to feed on the outside of the cloth "catcher" and cut it off the roll end when finished...without the print feeding into the basket. The rough texture of the cloth sometimes leaves marks when the print feeds into the "catcher".

I've also seen scratches from the "catcher" on film where the ink doesn't dry very quickly.

Another tip: In our studio we've noticed that some canvas coating liquids applied with a roller will "Pull" the ink off slightly unless the print is allowed to dry overnight.

Thanks dct123, I'm guessing it may well be that the ink isn't drying evenly but I'll heed your advice about the catcher too.

We've just bought ourselves a Hot Press (http://www.hotpress.co.uk/) so I'll see if that plays nicely with the marked prints.

There's no problem like that with Magiclee Intelicoat Torino 17M and the more expensive Hahnemuhle Canvas while the cheaper (within the HM gamma) HM FineArt canvas quality dried terribly long. For the HM ones I was told that the last had two coating layers and the first three. Having a silkscreen hot air dryer tunnel helps but it is just easier to use the right canvas.

We're still open to finding the ideal canvas, the two rolls of HP Pro Matte were complimentary when we got our 44" printer last month, unfortunately we just really don't have the time or resources to experiment.
