Multiple camera profiles in a single DNG .. why ??
« on: May 15, 2008, 10:32:50 am »

From Michael's post on the What's New page today about the DNG format updates -- http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/  ...

Quote
The definition of a camera profile for the DNG format as well as the allowance for multiple camera profiles to be embedded in a single DNG file

It struck me as odd and maybe there's something obvious that I'm missing out on here, but why would anyone want to have multiple camera profiles within a single DNG file?

Also just an observation ... but if Adobe wants to get the DNG format adopted I would think they would have to open up the format, no?  I remember these types of discussions many years ago about getting the PSD format adopted as a standard (which obviously didn't happen)

Comments?  Is there something I'm missing here?

When I used C1 (and later RSP) I had many profiles (by Magne Nilsen and others) for my cameras.  Being able to attach those to an image would be nice.  You'd have the RAW data and several different ways for the RAW converter to interpret the color data.

Hmm yes I guess you are both right ... I didn't really think of using multiple profiles for the same camera.  Yet another creative tool to (mis)use

Perhaps the intention is not necessarily to have multiple renderings or interpretations (a very specific feature that not many people would exploit but would be interesting to have), but to make the DNG file specification open and adaptable enough so that any camera manufacturer can embed the camera information that manufacturer wants?

In other words, make the DNG format friendly and adaptable enough, so everyone will sign up?

[edit - another thought]: it could also allow the end user to attach different types of "corrected" camera profiles.

That's what I was talking about.

RSP was tough to work with.  What would work well for people wouldn't work for a landscape.  At least with my 20D.
