HP Z3200?????
« on: May 10, 2008, 02:28:42 pm »

Hello

I was searching for some info about the Z3100 at the good Canada prices when I found this advert.

It refers to the inks being Z3100 / Z3200.

Nobody has any thoughts on this?   Love to know what's coming but honestly I want a 17inch big brother to the 9180 not a 3200 and I want one that has a real red ink!

Thanks for the link.  I'm on my third set of cartridges for my new Z3200, and I've been having a hard time finding ink.

I suppose it is only a matter of how much time until the 3100s successor, but I'd also like to see a tweener size printer from HP.

Well if true at least there is no change in the excellent matte black ink, which would maintain use of inks in older and newer printers.

Didn't Reichmann or somebody else post something about HP dumping Zx100 printers at drastically reduced prices in Canada? It fits that there must be a new model coming.

Yes, prices in Canada have been great.  Obviously a new model will come someday.  The question is when.  A week from now? A month from now?  A year from now?

Those in England could place a bet on when.  Everyone else just gets to idly speculate.

Just got an email from HP.  Right after one from Canon offering great deals on their line up with trade-ins, etc.

Now, with the HP Designjet Cash In & Trade Up promotion, you can deliver that incredible image quality at a great price! Just purchase or lease an eligible HP Designjet printer and then trade in your old HP or non-HP large-format printer, plotter or vinyl cutter and get up to $2,000 cash back*. Plus, HP pays for the return shipping of your trade-in product. And now, through July 31, 2008, get the latest HP Designjet printer for as low as a 1.9% lease rate**

It would seem that if they're replacing the Z3100 it won't be until after July 31.

This is a DRUPA year, kind of like the Photokina for the print world, but bigger. And only a few weeks away...

They call the red at least HP 73. The rest are still the same old 70 inks.
No info on if you can use the 73 in the Z3100 or not. The print head is different so you'd need to have a new print head, cartridges, but it sounds like you need to pay for a whole new printer.

Wouldn't you also need new firmware to handle the new ink and printhead and so that the papers might be profiled properly?

More importantly, you would need to send a significant chunk of change to HP.  Recent product evolution at Epson and Canon is a case in point:  Why give it away evolutionary development when we can get them to pay more for it?  I'm sure that they could have reengineered a few things to make a new ink work seamlessly with the Z3100, but they lack the financial incentive to do so.  My only hope is that they at least follow through with the new firmware upgrade for all of the models of the Z3100 before they freeze all development on it as a discontinued model.  As the owner of a PS GP model, with APS, on a Mac, I'm last in line for software development.

Well said, Ron.

I really like the prints I get from my Z3100 and I'm not inclined to even think about buying a Z3200 based on what I've seen so far.

Besides, until HP learns to talk to Z owners about the machines we already own why reward them with another purchase?

Same here - I have NO problems with the 3100 output - I wouldn't pay a dime for a little better red based on what I get now!

Ron, we certainly agree on that point!

(1)  I'd add another point for anyone looking for a new printer.  Anyone who buys the new printer in the first six months after it is released is a damn fool.  The last time, in the case of the Z3100, those who bought the printer and APS in the first three months lost a whopping $800, when HP dropped the price by $800 after only three months, even after all other discounts and free paper were taken into account.

If you have $800 to throw away, by all means, buy the printer when it is first released.

Otherwise, wait until HP drops the price in the first three to six months.

(2)  I'd also recommend waiting to see what Canon and Epson have in the works.  And compare the price of the new Epson to that of HP with their inevitable price increase for a new printer.  Epson claims that their new profiling system, that attaches to the front of the printer, rather than being part of the print head that sprays ink, is superior and less subject to fouling and other problems.  I have no idea if that is true, but it is a very different design approach.

(3)  For all of you who worked with HP on the issue of the reds -- the key question is whether the new ink will work in the Z3100.  My guess is that it won't.  If so, those who spent months and years working with HP on the reds issue for the Z3100 have been royally screwed.

They fixed the problem, finally.  But you might have to buy a new printer to benefit from the solution.

On Photo media the reds were generally inline with the source image. Especially if you profiled with APS. True Canon had/has by far the best reds (not talking about the 3200) and Epson could go way beyond on matte, but more than only red.
IQ on the Z is and always will be very good output comparable to any other printer on the vast majority of images printed. It only would be a concern for third party papers, matte papers, where there are images that are much better on the competitors.
If anything the 3200 brings it in line with the other two. Epson still outdoes HP and Canon on matte.

The next Epson 79+9900 will bring them up to par in saturated colours too.

And yes the spectro on the Epson has it's advantages, but the price is higher too.
