Epson 11880 features in 24" printer
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:08:50 pm »

I currently use the Epson 4800 and am ready to move to a 24" wide printer.  It seems that Epson might be planning to bring features now limited to the 11880 down into the 9880 and 7880 machines (9990 and 7990 ???).
Does anyone have insight as to if this is likely and, if so, when?

You might want to check a few recent posts in this forum on this very topic.

The rumour has it that these printers will be announced in June. They would be featuring a new 10 inks inkset, but there are no details yet regarding the print head etc... so that it is too early to say to what extend the 11800 technology would be used in those new 24 and 44 inches models.

Regards,
Bernard

No, a gloss optimizer and PK-MK both installed, if they are smart.

If you're under NDA, why are you disclosing anything, including suggesting when information might be released?

I suggest you re-read your agreement.

I have a new 9880.

What it needs it a cutter built into it that will cut canvas and stocks of similar weight. These are popular papers and should be accommodated.

It also needs to replicate the ImagePrint Phatte Black system so there is NO line purging at all. Even 4m every time is not satisfactory when it is being done with 0m waste.

As far as quality goes, whatever they can do to make it better will icing on the cake. The prints I am getting out of the printer is better than any film and lab days prints I have ever gotten. And I am only using Qimage instead of a rip, so I am very very pleased at the level of quality coming out the front end of this thing.

Speed would be a point to improve on too. This is supposed to be faster than the older units, it makes me wonder how much slower the older units really are. Something to think about.

So "Theoretically"   IF Epson added orange and green would that represent an improvement over the red, green and blue that HP and Canon have added?

Are those the weakest spots of the Epson gamut, or is that so they can print some fortune 500 companies logo?

For those of you using a 11880, has that printer made significant progress in reducing clogs? That's the biggest feature I want to see in a new 24" printer.

Absolutely. Compared to my 9800 it is virtually maintenance free.

Yes, very improved. It has a "selfdetecting" system, which scans the printhead and clean if it's needed. In five months of everyday printing, I've only once had a minor problem with a b/w print.
Never on a colorprint.

One minor clog after a couple of weeks, otherwise clog free since October.

Hmm..  I think you should be careful about these reports since those guys use their printer daily or I guess at least once a week.
My 4800 printer never made any problems when I used it that regularly.
But when I didn't print for a few weeks, I always had to run heavy cleaning cycles before I could print.

I'm wondering if this behavior will be past with the new models expected at DRUPA.

Told you so! :-]
Kudos to Canon and HP for doing this first and a big "ha!" to those Epson evangelists that poo-pooed the benefits (gamut and smoothness) of additive primary inks.

Actually, I think Michael didn't take the bet because might have heard something, as well.

That's how I took it as well. I just thought I'd quote both of our comments for reference.
