CaptureOne 4.1 Beta
« on: April 30, 2008, 02:42:24 pm »

Hello I have been working with the new Capture One 4.1 beta today and I can see some significant improvements right off the bat.
• Ability to shoot tethered with PhaseOne digital backs. You can not only hook one up have at least (2) digital backs connected at once and choose which one you want to use by a drop down menu.
• Preview generation while shooting tethered is down to 3 seconds on our MacPro 3.0 8-Core machine vs about 11 seconds with 3.7.8 on the same machine.
• Hot folder is enabled so users of DSLRS can designate a folder to be watched and captured images  will appear in preview area of CaptureOne.

As we come across any other significant changes we will keep you up to date.
Not sure of the public release date yet.

You have no idea how happy I am to hear that this version is moving on. I'm sick to death of using 3.7.8 to tethered shoot!

Hope the full version comes soon

Lance,

One issue I had when trying the original C1 Beta V4 last year was that on my Macbook, with the exposure tab selected, the curve dialog window was cut off, truncated with no way of viewing the whole curve. The Macbook has a smaller screen than the Macbook Pros but still that's no excuse. Phase has made no method of reducing the tool selections within the tool tabs to accomodate many screens sizes.

I sent that with a list of other issues during that beta, and it seems that Phase made no effort to fix that even in the current 4.0.1 version.

I have used Capture One Pro for four years now with many Canon cameras, for tethering and processing. But it's little things like that which are not so little that drive me nuts. I know Phase is working hard on V4 but I just don't see the same level of attention as the version 3 series which just worked, worked well regardless of speed benchmarks.

Will check on my Macbook tonight and let you know.

Lance,

I am glad to hear the new function.
But there are a few questions I would like to ask.
1. Is there pro version in future?
2. Does phaseone plan to use the folder structure same as v.3.7? With old version 3.7.8 when I open old session and develop more files. It goes automatically to it's session output folder. Much easier to find. v.4 new files always goes in the same one folder.
3. Does phaseone plan to add color editor, style color in v.4?
4. Does the new version gonna has RGB level or curve slider adjust each color seperately?

I am using C1.v3.7.8 Pro but never use LE. So I really don't know difference. I feel C1v4 looks much like amateur product and lack a lot of pro version. Does phaseone plan Pro version for digital back user?

kitty

PS. one more question. I am trying 4.0.1 and I could not select many pictures and do batch process.
I have to select one image hit process and select another one and hit process. Don't know others has the same problem or not.

To batch process, hold down the shift key and toggle over the process button, it will tell you that you can batch all the selected images.

To rotate images in batch just select the images and hold down the option key and then it will let you batch rotate.

I like most of the functions of V4, though also would like to see individual color channel controls and even split toning.

I would also like to see a more subtle form of moving the noise (both chroma and luminance) sliders for a desired effect.

it seems these need some adjustmets from phase as they are now too agressive for high iso, especially the luminance noise reduction.

Still, overall I find V4 to process phase files well as anything except maybe raw developer.

Brian writes one great processing engine.

I've downloaded the trial but cannot use it I'm afraid.
I reworked the Leaf Aptus22 files into DNG files which should be compatible with the software (any other software opens them) but they don't even show up on the browser, my Canon files do, as do JPEG's but no DNG's from the Leaf.

Which is a shame because I was planning on using C4 on my Vista64 machines up untill Leaf has a 64 bits version of LC.

In the studio I still use LC so no need for that.

What I can see from the work I did with the Canon files the software has improved considerably (C3.7 was already my favorite for the Canon files).
Only a shame they don't support DNGs they way it should.

Thanks James, for your reply.
I have tried shift  key and command key to select multiple images.
I really don't know why it does't work. I am using MacPro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Inel Xeon.
That is what I thought it is a bug.

I agree C1v4 files look better than v.3.7
Just a lot of feature missing. And folder structure is not good.
For example, v.3.7 When I start new session everything is in that folder, capture, process, trash.
When I want to process some more files from old session. I know where the new process files is going. I will go in the same session folder.
With v.4 all the new process files go in the same output folder.
I feel the old way is better.

I really wish v4 pro is coming soon.

Is the 4.1 (NOT 4.01) available to download?  If so, where?

And I sure hope it will be stable on Windows XP x64 64-bit!  I have no interested in downgrading to VISTA and way too much invested to switch to a MAC!

Thanks

I am using the new beta on a mac and it is working actually very well . Except my ZD files look over exposed about a 1/2 to a stop. C1 is most likely doing something when they come in. Something I am sure they will fix straight away but the files processed in it look very nice indeed. There are some new functions in C1 and if you have a Phase back you will be very happy. i can't use them with my ZD but for Phase owners it will be nice. i won't talk about those features though since it is still beta. I will be doing a workshop in San Juan in two weeks and Lance is coming with all the Phase backs for my attendees to demo , so I will get a chance to shoot and process them in C1 beta so that should be very interesting. I do have some images I shot yesterday that I processed in C1 like the last 10 images in this thread . The beginning was LR and was really just testing this new system for me out. About post 23 on is C1 . http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1670
