Canon Extension tube for 70-200 F2.8L IS
« on: April 24, 2008, 10:36:46 pm »

What extension tube should I get for the 70-200 F2.8L IS so that I dont have to cart around a seperate macro lens on my Tasmania trip?
Canon have two models - does it matter which one?

I'm using the 25 mm extension tube (EF25 II). I also have the 12 mm but only use it with shorter lenses. In fact, I barely use the 12 mm.

The maximum native mag of your lens is 0.16x. Adding a 12mm tube will only take it to 0.22x whilst the 25mm tube will push you up to 0.41x

Adorama has a really cheap set of extension tubes.  I think you can get a set for the price of any one canon tube.  I don't think they are as well built.  Not usually an issue with extension tubes.

I just tested a set of Soligor extension tubes for Canon but returned them, they don't really fit snugly, there's a bit of clearance if you stack them which feels awkward. I bought an extra Canon 25 instead and now use the older type EF25 mm plus the new EF25II and the EF12II. If I stack them I get really nice results with my EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS. See attached pics of a spider attacking a beetle.

By the way, according to the instruction leaflet for the Canon tubes you shouldn't stack several tubes, but I don't quite see why not. It works fine.

I've also been using stacked extension tube without any problem.

Chuck Westfall - from Canon USA - answered this question on Digital Journalist website (here):

The main reason why Canon advises users not to stack extension tubes or other coupled lens accessories like extenders is the possibility that the camera's shutter may not release. Each extra accessory increases the level of electrical resistance. But, you are welcome to try; many users have reported successful results using 2 or 3 coupled extension tubes.
