What I'd like to do is build one view camera system that will handle 6x17 roll film and a Linhof sliding /stitching back for a P45+ back. The obvious issues are size and weight. To support 6x17 it takes a 5x7 back - serious over kill for the digital - but I don't really want to carry around the parts to convert to a 6x9 if I can avoid it.
The less obvious issue is movements - specifically should I be trying to get geared movements for the digital back - Tilt and Swing in particular? That wold mean Sinar probably a P2 - assuming I can find a 5x7 back for it.
I'm about ready to give up and just plan on 2 different cameras for this - an Ebony 617s and a Linhof M679cs
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated - maybe I'm missing something obvious. Maybe I just need to think about this a different way.
Not being in a position to be able to try any of the alternatives ( no-one in Washington has this type of gear in stock ). I can't tell if I could make the detailed shifts and tilts needed by the digital back (such a small ground glass) with out geared movements. If I can - then maybe the answer is a 5x7 field camera - the Ebony SV57U would probably be my choice. - that would let me continue to shoot 6x17, 4x5 and I can have a sliding/stitching back made to do what I want for the 5x7 back - ( I'd really like to do stitched shots in portrait mode that result in about a 1:3 format - which would take a stitching back with 5 detentes and about 15mm overlap.
Thanks,
Vince
