I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences of using super wide lenses on a leaf aptus arca swiss combo. my widest lens in the 38xl (schneider) which just doesnt seem to have the coverage I need but has a fair amount of distortion,am tempted by 28  but worried about a) price, is it really worth so much and b) distortion

I shoot architecture and design wordwide

advice greatly received

if you make some research in previous posts here you will find many infos anout the questions you have .... some good architecture shooters are here and already have described their setups.
if its worth to spend the money you have to decide. for me it is ....

Good to see you here!
I think if you use a 28mm, distortion is very much noticable
in objects close to the lens so using it in interiors is out of the question for me.
I do all interiors with a 35 and if i need anything wider for outside, which is actually rarely; I stich
How is the Japan shoot going?

do you speak about the 28HR?
i use this lens a lot.... and would suggest to give it a try at least.
i dont have problem with distortion,- its between 05 - 1% which is in most case not noticeable at all.
same about the schneider 24xl which even is in this aspect slightly better.
both are great wideangles on alpas,cambos and so on.
wouldnt like to work digital on architecture without some lens which is wider than 35mm.
so i do the same as you do with your 35. i stitch sometimes with the 28HR which results in a fov comparable to a 22mm lens. still not an extreme wide...  compared with the "old" 4x5" wides as was the 47xl.

I think Marc means the 28 H3D lens.
However that lens is corrected in the software from Flexcolor.

All of the Hasselblad lenses are properly corrected for barrel distortion
there is no problem there.
I just find that when I go that wide anything on the foreground just becomes too big
although it is perfectly straight in the final photo. I think I would be able to use the 28
if I had enough room to walk back and I wanted to give a big overview, but in smaller spaces
the corner of the bed or the corner of the coffee table in the foreground just do not look real in size any more.
It is time that the architect or interior designer starts to design with the photographer needs  in mind; that there is always room to at least walk back a few meters and dimmable lights everywhere
with easy hand held devices, is that too much to ask for??!?!?!?!?

i understood that edmund is searching a camera system with shift lenses as the arca, which is another chapter for its symmetric or nearly symmetric ( rodenstock ) lenses.

Edmund when are you guys coming back?
I'd like you to try your back on a "pancake" camera with a lens wider than the 38mm (38mm is the widest you can practically use on your Arca, without having major focusing issues).

Edmund... you might need a Schneider 35XL on something like (as yaya suggests)  the Cambo Wide DS, or the Alpa. That provides for a lot of shift in both axes. (So you can stitch easily with Photoshop CS3 as well)

Also the 24XL is an excellent lens and cheaper than the Rodenstock 28.  (The difference will get you some of the way towards a Cambo body).

I rarely use the 24XL though, its generally a bit too wide. Shift isn't really that essential with the 24, especially with a back like the Aptus 75 as perspective corrected images still retain a lot of detail.

I guess its just a case of getting my head aroud different formats

and the sewing kit !!!

the 28 sounds a bit too distorted for my tastes

and I would agree that architects should make walls more movable for shoots !!!

would love to check out an alternative system

the leaf is working really really well (much better than I ever imagined)

its taking shots in minutes (colour wise) that I used to work at for over an hour with gels filters etc

dead sharp too
