Joshua Trees
« on: April 11, 2008, 08:15:55 am »

This shot is from Joshua Tree National Park, taken after sunset. The trees are painted with a 2.5 million candle lamp.
I'd be interested in your opinion of the composition, have at it!

It makes me smile Jeff: the trees look almost as if they are chatting to each other and were caught unawares by the light.

Not sure if that was the reaction you wanted?

I like it
Here is a crop that zooms in on main subject and moves the center tree off center

There is a playfulness to the trees isn't there...
It's YOUR reaction that's important... thanks!

Um....it looks like you put a flashlight on some trees after sunset?

Maybe in B&W - doesn't do anything for me.

Ah, so you're one of those that really only wants pats on the back - when someone answers your question of

"does it work for you? I'd be interested in your opinion of the composition, have at it!" with something negative, you reply with a snotty sarcastic remark.

Got it.

Little advice, next time don't ask for what you don't want, just post - "hey look at this shot I took that I like - just give me priase or don't post!"

You know Kalaeria, the Borat-like throw-away comments you drop on people on this website might be taken more seriously if they were more considerate. You were the one being sarcastic by referring to the flashlight on the trees.

I'm not looking for affirmation, nor do I need it. My post asked for opinion on the composition. Normally, people offer reasons for their opinions. In your case, "doesn't work for me" tells me nothing useful. That's the purpose of this forum- to provide constructive feedback that people can use in improving their images.

Wow - someone has some sand in their pantyhose

I said exactly what I meant - it looks litterally like you shone a flashlight on some trees after sunset - pretty boring.  I don't know what more detail you want or need...does the brand of the flashlight matter?

You asked "does it work for you?"  I answered with "doesn't do anything for me".  Here, I'll be a little more clear for you:

Nothing about it appeals to me.  It looks like a snapshot, with no interesting main subject, flat light from what appears to be a hand torch, and is over saturated for my taste.  No, it does not 'work for me'.

As I said, post what you REALLY want next time.  I didn't say anything that was inconsiderate, I posted my opinion which was exactly what you asked for.  You even baited your question with "have at it!".  I gave you my constructive comment - try it in B&W.  There is nothing in that shot that lends itself to a good color composition - that's your key to try B&W.

Maybe members like you that throw a hissy fit should have a special tag under your username so the rest of us know how oversensative you are

Perhaps he was looking for constructive criticism, not just for a snidely uninformative put-down.

Really? I think perhaps your critical technique could itself be subjected to some CC. At best it's unnecessarily terse.

But perhaps your remarks seemed more meaningful to you than would be obvious to the casual reader.

Well, that's your opinion, and I'm certainly not going to admonish you for stating it
