1ds MkIII serious fabric moire issues
« on: April 08, 2008, 03:24:59 am »

So far I have been very happy with my 1ds Mkiii, until yesterday. I have this catalogue  shooting for shirts, so I did a quick test yesterday, to find out huge mire patterns on some shirts, visible at any zoom percentage! Have you had any similar problems? Is there any way to make it go away without hours of retouching?
Thanks for any advice,
George

Have you tried using the Demoire tool that comes with Phaseone C1 Pro v3.7.8?

No I haven't because I only have a very old version of C1, but I ll guess I can try it on a friend's computer who actually has the latest version. Does it support 1ds Mkiii files?

I' using  Photoshop to remove moiré.

1. Duplicate the background layer.
2. Use Color blending mode on that layer.
3. Blur the duplicate layer about 10-15 pixels radius.
4. Use a layer mask to limit the moiré correction to the affected areas.

As far as I remember, this method was mentioned in one of the books by Martin Evening.

Most of the time, it gives me good results.

I am familiar with that method, but here I have big issues, I m talking huge moire patterns. I guess I have to face it and retouch every individual image...

Good luck!
As I said above, the method works fine most of the time ... but I agree, it fails miserably on difficult moiré patterns.

By the way, Phase One's DeMoirize plug-in works only in 8-bit mode (at least the one installed on my Mac).

Hi!

If possible, you might try shooting with a softer lens or stopping down more to have some diffraction blur.

Cheers,

Are you using an older version oh Phase to process/view the files or are you RAW converting in PS or other? The reason I ask is the older versions of Phase software were bloody awful with moire problems on fabric. Especially on denim in my experience.

Anyways the good news is I'm not sure what they changed but even without using the moire tool the new versions ( I'd guess at 3.1 and newer ) are much much better at eliminating moire in the capture itself. I have no idea what they changed but I can tell you I've used Phase from the very first lightphase and moire was a big problem for me that just disappeared somehow even when using the same camera, lenses, and backs.

I seem to remember a moire removal tutorial on Russel Browns site, don't know if it the same as the one mentioned above though.  Wayne
