H3DII Questions
« on: April 03, 2008, 01:33:24 pm »

Hi,
Does the H3DII have a removable battery for the back or does it run on the camera battery?
Is anyone using this camera tethered to a PC laptop?  My PC laptop has a 4 pin firewire connection only.  I know I can get a 4 to 8 pin wire but does the back need the 8 pin or even 6 for transfering files or additional battery power?

No, the back is powered by the grip (camera) battery.

I believe you can get an adapter to conenct it to the 4-pin, but I have not done so yet.

You will need to charge the back's internal battery with a firewire with power. If you do not have this, purchase a powered firewire hub and recharge the camera back's internal battery, depending on your usage, perhaps once a month or more.

File transfer should not be a problem with smaller firewire port size--but power is not supplied with the smaller plug. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.
Is the internal battery just to hold preferences set in the back?
If I was to use this back on a view camera and a PC laptop how would it get power?  Is there something like Phase's portable solution used on the "H" backs?

It is unclear about what the internal battery does/keeps, but time and settings makes sense.

It is my sincerest prayer that Steve can answer your second question, because it is a good one.

Prayer is answered.

You have 2 options:

Mac laptop (via firewire).

OR

100GB ImageBank (iPod sized drive that takes Sony NPF battery and holds 1000+ images). About the price of (10) 8GB Sandisk IV CF cards.

Fraherim,

My PC laptop has exactly the same 4-pin firewire as yours.

I have purchased an Express Card which has the larger firewire sockets on it. When this is used I get the same connectivity as using a socket directly. i.e. The back is powered by the laptop and Flexcolor controls the camera.

This one is typical........

Additionally, if you go down the ImageBank route, you can get either the Sony AC-VQ1050D dual bay L-Series charger, or the single bay AC-V700A charger, which also includes a special cable that acts as a dummy L-series battery that plugs into the ImageBank battery socket, powering it from the mains supply. I keep batteries charged up but use AC while in the studio so the batteries are always ready to go.

I have just gone down this path, and all the functions work perfectly, except the fire wire cable with the large plugs on is very stiff and inflexible ok if used on a tripod but a pain for hand held fashion style shooting.

Thanks for the info.  It sounds like The additional card for the PC laptop is what I will need to shoot with the back attached to the H3 and I would need the Imagebank to power the back if I attach the back to a view camera using a PC laptop with the option of the mentioned sony part to power the Imagebank with AC.

Do I understand this correctly?
