I was lucky enough to be in Bisti Badlands for the full moon last week....

This is a double exposure (aka "composite").... but I think an "honest" one... I lined up the shot and waited patiently for the moon to come up in just the right spot, then made two exposures, one for the foreground and one for the moon. Processed in Lightroom and composited in Photoshop.

C&C always appreciated!

Nat,  There are a lot of people who decry this sort of thing saying it is cheating or not "pure" photography.  I am definitely NOT one of them.  I think your shot shows a lot of forethought and good execution all around - just what a good photograph often entails.  For those of us old enough to remember working in a "wet darkroom" there were certainly many "tricks" employed to bring the image that was in our mind when we snapped the shutter to life on the paper.  I your case here the image was clearly in your mind BEFORE you snapped the shutter - good for you!
Like it a lot, Bruce Hood

I like it a lot!

I expect to be in the Bisti Badlands next month for the first time. I'll look for your spot.

I quite like it. Only real comment is I think the moon is a little bright. (Yes, I know its really brighter !), but I think its a little overpowersing compared the the overall tone of the rest of the image.  (or the cliff is a bit dark / blue maybe).

Of coruse, thats on the web, it may print just fine.

As for a composition, by your description, it was just a High-Dynamic-Range shot, blended for exposure, which is just a way of overcomming limitations on camera equipment.   Now if you shot the moon someplace else, and put it in, then (to me) it would be stretching it a bit, but thats not what happend, so no issues !.

I was on Fraser Island for the full moon, and all I got was cloud

Regards

Mark

Very nice Nat!  You must have been very hungry by the time you had dinner that night.  Is there a slight halo around the moon or is it my monitor seeing things?  If it's on the original - is that from water vapor in the atmosphere or an artifact from blending the two images?

Also, did you by any chance go to/from Bisti to Chaco Canyon?  If so, is there a fairly direct route?  I will be going from Bisti to Chaco in May and my current plan is to access Chaco from the south via Chaco Canyon Road - assuming that it's passable then.

Thanks,
Johnny

I will be doing both Bisti and Chac Canyon in April. From all I've heard, there are three roads into Chaco Canyon, and only the one from the North is passable. I wouldn't mind hearing from others who know the area, though.

I am only aware of two roads open to the public currently. There is really no north entrance access anymore. The east entry, road from Nageezi, is the best maintained as that is the way most visitors enter, but the south road is certainly always passable. It has been very dry and warm recently so the roads should be dry, washboards will be present this time of year and slow you down. They probably have not done the early spring grading yet. It will be cool at night. I have seen heavy snows in April.

Thanks, Kirk. That's very helpful.

I think the road from Nageezi is the one I meant, but I'll be coming down from Farmington to get there. My wife and I are spending three weeks in New Mexico, starting down near White Sands and working North. I'm hoping that most snows will be gone or manageable by the time we get to Bisti and Chaco fairly late in April.

This is my first trip to New Mexico and I'm quite excited about it.

Regards,

Eric

From Chaco the fastest access to Bisti is 550 north to county road 7500 west. From here you can enter from the De-Na-Zin entrance or continue to Hwy 371 north to the Bisti entrance.

Call the BLM office in Farmington for current road conditions.

Funny this thread should pop up today, I'm planning on trying to make a long-weekend trip to Bisti/Chaco for the full moon in mid-May.

I like the shot, though I'm wondering how you did the compositing, was it just a copy/paste, or did you use a blend mode other than normal? There's a bit of a faint halo around the moon that I find a little bit distracting.

As a note to any of you going to Bisti from the Farmington side, go to the second road (can't remember the name). If you take the first exit just across from the Bisti sign, you'll have to bush whack and cross a nasty little creek bed in order to get to the gate. Not too bad for a high clearance vehicle, but anything else it's impassable.

Thanks for the tip. I will be doing exactly that in a couple of weeks.

Nice shot!

Those roads were all in very good shape last week.
