New Olympus 12-60mm lens usage
« on: March 21, 2008, 07:16:27 pm »

Is anyone using this lens? And happy?

I have bought one and made my first use of it during sunset with highlights.
I have noticed in that case that there is some color (purple) fringing that appears on transitions from bright sky to dark tree branches in the corners.

I am a little surprised that a $1000 high grade lens would still exhibit such behavior.

Also I feel that the pictures taken are not quite tack-sharp at 1:1 viewing, but maybe it's because I moved, even with IS on?

That said, after severe sharpening and fringing corrections, the photo looks OK. I would want it to be OK at first to become stunning after software corrections though.

I am using an E510 body with that lens, stuck at ISO-200 to limit
CCD noise which is a known issue with the smaller four-third CCDs
(resolved it seems on the E3).

The photo did not show excessive noise however during post-processing.

Here's a 1:1 blow-up of a photo after correction:

No comments on the lens (other than it is supposed to be very nice) but I thought I would mention that there is a recall on it.  You might want to check with olympus to see if your lens is one of the recalled lenses.
