It appears that there are several problems with the Lightroom 1.4 update, and Tom Hogarty has pulled it today. There is a new update to be downloaded, 1.3.1. For details, see:

Never a dull moment, eh?

I haven't installed it as I was waiting for the cracks to be discovered, before deciding it was worth doing. Pulling it though!
Adobe seem to be really strugling to get their software working properly, these last couple of years.

Well, that some people are experiencing problems with LR 1.4 is a fact. Whether Adobe is struggling with its software of late is a question of perception. My experience has been that they are producing spectacularly accomplished tools that work well for me day in and day out. Just this afternoon I taught my wife — a professor of art history at Penn State — how to use Lightroom to manage the thousands of images she needs now that she is using Keynote and digital projection to lecture, instead of slides. She was stunned at how elegant and intuitive it is, and started keywording and creating collections immediately. With the help of Martin Evening's very fine Lightroom book and Michael and Jeff's tutorials, I finally feel as though I'm on top of nearly all the functions of the software, and I am frankly amazed at how thoroughly the Adobe engineering team has addressed what photographers need it to do. It's a non-trivial task to really understand Lightroom; I can hardly imagine what it must be like to imagine and then code it! So, even though it's easy to be sympathetic to those who got burned with the 1.4 update, I'm not sure that a little sympathy isn't in order.

Although I've had LR since the beta, only with 1.3 was it good enough to do any serious work on it, too slow, too buggy and flawed before that. Bridge 2.0 is also very flakey and PS CS3 is the first version of PS I've ever used that was a step backwards interface wise.
LR good as it is is still deeply flawed. It won't import many of my Photoshop images as they are either dutoned or tritoned, it cannot be used to copy images off a card as it simply ignores some file formats, which means if you could lose files if you rely on LR to copy data....
So I'm a bit underwhelemd with Adobe at present There's a lot of complaining on the Adobe forums. I find it too depressing to visit anymore.

I'm mostly happy with the current state of Adobe design overall, but have to agree with others that the software is no longer solid and stable, by historic standards.  The last year has been the rockiest yet for Adobe products on one of my systems, running CS3 on an Intel mac, and I've been on board since Illustrator 88 and Photoshop 3.

Thanks for the "heads up".  Downloaded it, but not installed, thankfully.

Well, for this once, I was too fast....

Anyhow, I´ve just reverted to 1.3.1, and am happy to report there were no problems doing it, if one followed the instructions (I´m on a Mac, of course; with Windows there will ALWAYS be problems...  )

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I installed 1.4 on PC and Mac without any apparent problem so far.

Guess I'm doomed to a month of worry

Well, I did see the problem with the dates.  Apart from that, nothing.  Just don´t like the idea of a pulled version playing around with my data base...

I didn´t.  The removal of the application bundle plus the "receipt" bundle is just to prevent the installer from balking because it sees a "newer" version already installed.

The preference files and application support files, with all saved presets, option settings, and license data, is still there to see for the newly installed version.

No product license is needed. Simply delete the application and the associated files as per these directions from the lightroom journal  "To uninstall Lightroom 1.4 please see the instructions per your platform:
Mac: Delete the Lightroom application in the Application folder(Mac) and Delete the following file:  Library/Receipts/Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.pkg
Windows: Choose the Uninstall Lightroom 1.4 menu item from the Windows start menu.  The Add/Remove Program utility on Windows will also achieve the same result. ".
Then you should simply install LR. You should revert Camera Raw too, per [a href=\"http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2008/03/important_lightroom_14_and_cam.html]http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/20...14_and_cam.html[/url]. When you are done, LR will not require any relicensing and it -should- be functioning normally.

Strange. I ran the 1.4 uninstall, then the 1.3.1 install. LR just came back to its Friday 1.3.1 state, with all settings intact. Even went back to the last image I worked on. Never had to enter my product key, and I didn't even reboot the computer (HP system with Athlon chip, Vista 32 bit).

Hummm, did not have to reenter my key when I reverted to v1.3.1 either.

The step back went smooth here.

Thanks for the update.

I just uninstall 1.4 and reloaded 1.3.1 with no problems.
Did not even have to enter key number.

Adobe really need to get a grip on this, looks like they are just coasting along till LR 2. I am amazed this one got throught testing..ah well, I guess they all make mistakes.

And whilst we are at it, can we knock this base level NR processing on the head too please, whilst its not as strong as previous versions, its still there. 0 should mean no NR done at all.
