Which paper to choose for Epson media offer?
« on: March 14, 2008, 12:26:22 am »

Thanks to everyone for helping me decide between the 3800 and the 4880.  I went today with a flash drive to Calumet in Chicago and worked with Zane (good guy to work with) to print two sample pix of mine; one in color and one in BW.  I wanted to verify the quality of the prints.  Epson Premium Luster was the roll that was loaded.  I thought both prints looked outstanding.  So I'm pretty much sold on the 4880, the question remains as to the best *deal* I can get (see my previous thread) and what paper I should take advantage of for the free offer.

I'd like to see what some of the more experienced folks here would choose if they could get three free media choices; I'm not too sure how I feel about the premium luster, I'll need to review the samples again.

Here is a list of the papers that (sizewise) could work well with this printer.  Tell me which 3 you would pick and why!  :-)

Thanks for all of the help!

Premium Luster,  excellent Paper, RC based, will outgas.  I love the look with color prints.

Epson Premium Glossy.  Again a great overall paper, with the newer inksets gloss differential not as bad.  Will outgas.

Epson Enhanced matte.  You will be able to print with both inksets installed.  This is a great starting point for a matte paper.

I would also consider the Epson Premier water resistant canvas.  This particular canvas has a more aggressive look than others I have used, however once the ink in on it, it's very bomb proof.  I still would coat it.

Go look at prices first.

The canvas is expensive, definitely worth grabbing if you can use it.

The Epson Enhanced Matte is the cheapest roll around. Get the more expensive stuff for free, then buy a roll of EEM out of pocket.

Check the price on the Exhibition Fiber, that is a wonderful paper that is pricy.

Ultrasmooth is a nice premium matte paper.  Luster is a good basic proofing paper, as is the Premium Semi-matte.

Good luck.

I'm still looking for your votes!

Which paper would you choose for the "Epson March Madness" offer?

I'll be giving my John Hancock in the next few days for a new 4880 so I'll need to make a decision because the offer ends in March.

So far, the votes are:

$169  SP91221 PremierArt Water Resistant Canvas 17” x 40’ roll
(probably not for me, although to be honest I'm not even familiar with it).

$199  17x22 Exhibition fiber cut sheets (sounds good based on what I've heard)

$125  S041856 UltraSmooth Fine Art Paper 17” x 50’ roll (sounds good)

$99  S042079 Premium Luster Photo Paper (260) 16” x 100’ roll (for some reason, I wasn't thrilled with the samples I saw....not really sure why...maybe I'm more "Matte"); plus I would prefer a 17 inch roll if possible to get the most bang for my buck and trim as needed.

$99  S042149 Premium Semimatte Photo Paper (260) 16” x 100’ roll (I would prefer a 17 inch roll)

$93  S042076 Premium Glossy Photo Paper (170) 16.5” x 100’ roll (could be interesting)

$59  S041725 Enhanced Matte Paper 17” x 100’ roll (someone had indicated this is a good starting point for Matte paper, but also the most inexpensive and might be worth just buying one outright).

Anyone else have any suggestions on how I should play this "hand" out?  See my original post for the options that are available.  Also willing to hear things like "choose this one and that one and that one, and then buy a roll/box of "this" yourself.

Thanks!!
