Quality DVD programs for slideshows
« on: March 13, 2008, 11:59:20 am »

I am looking for a program that won't compromise the quality of my photographs when I put them in DVD format.  I have worked with iDVD and every time it reduces the quality of the photograph to crap.  I have checked the settings to put it on its highest quality setting.  All the images are high quality and quite large 100-200 MB.   I have figured out the color issue, converting the images to sRGB fixed the lack of saturation, but my problem now is resolution.  I am trying to burn my slideshow to DVD format to distribute them to galleries and potential clients.  Even the type on the DVD looks fuzzy and the images look pixilated.  Any suggestion on new software would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Eric

Hello,

I am very happy with fotomagico:

They have now also a beta test running on the next version

Howdy,

If you're using images that are 200MB, maybe iDVD is downsizing the images and not doing such a good job.  Did you try to resize the images to screen resolution?

I just started using Magico and have exported one slide show for use on HD Tv. I have the feeling that I have used a great deal of overkill in my images. It took a long time for the computer [MacBook Pro] to prepare the show for burning once I had it set up.

What kind of resolution do you need and what DPI is suitable [I am usually in 360].

Don't know about mac software - I use Proshow Gold on PC, but seeing as TV resolution is so low using such large files must be overkill, and the software is having to do a major downsize job.

I suggest you downsize the originals to 1024*768 for standard 4/3 DVD, and maybe twice that for HD.  Don't forget to sharpen the images suitably for that resolution and convert to Srgb space.

The actual DVD resolution is 720x480 for both 4:3 and 16:9. Set the pixel aspect ratio (non-square pixels) in Photoshop to 0.889 for 4:3 and 1.185 for 16:9. For HD, use either 1280x720 or 1920x1080, no pixel aspect ratio adjustment necessary. If you use any sizes other than these, the image is going to be resampled again and any sharpening you've done is going to be flushed down the toilet.
