Hi,
Soon I will be back to Los Angeles for a two day workshop I will be teaching.
Last year I did alot of shooting in the area arround LA and tried to remember and write down were I shot what.....
Well it worked a little bit, expect in the desert and Joshua tree park.
I know there is a way to add GPS information to the files.
As far as I know Sony has a unit that will work but it will only add the information to JPEGs.
I shoot with both a 5D/1DsIII and a Leaf digital back.
I would love the following.
A GPS units (small) that is synced with the time on my cameras.
When I get back in the hotel at the end of the day I would like to download the GPS unit and sync this with the RAWs of my cameras (in lightroom or any other programm).
Anyone an idea ?
Greetings,
Frank

There are a couple of ways of doing this. I have a Garmin Forerunner (on a wristband, designed for running, biking, etc.). I turn on the Garmin and make sure it's tracking before I start shooting, and shut it off after I finish. Then I download the GPS tracks to a specific folder on my computer, via the workout tracking software that came with the unit. I use Downloader Pro to transfer camera shots from a CF to the computer. It knows where to look for the GPS tracks. Downloader then compares the time a shot was taken to the GPS location for that same time, and adds that location to the EXIF for the shot.
The advantages to that setup are that I could use just about any kind of GPS reciever, and nothing has to get attached to the camera. Also, I used Downloader before I tried the GPS tagging, because it has some very sophisticated sorting and file naming capabilities to help keep my shots organized. The GPS link is just icing on the cake. The downside of this process is that I have to go through the steps to load the GPS tracks, in addition to pulling the shots off the CF.
The Sony unit works much the same way. You trun it on and make sure it's recording, shoot as normal, then the Sony software takes care of pulling the GPS tracks off the GPS unit, and tagging your shots accordingly. Not sure if it handles raw or not. At first, it only worked with files generated by Sony cameras, but I think that is no longer the case.
There are also units that plug into certain cameras. That eliminates the extra step of loading GPS tracks into the computer, but will draw power from the camera batteries, and is tied very tightly to specific hardware. So it probably wouldn't work for both the DB and the DSLR. You'd probably be better off with the Sony unit, or a generic GPS and something like Downloader. Does your DB have an internal clock? None of this will work unless the images contain a time stamp in their EXIF.
