I'll swing back through Yosemite the second week of May on the return leg of this jaunt. More crowds for certain, and perhaps the road repairs will be complete by then. I'll be there on weekdays only, though!

May is, in my opinion, the very best time to see Yosemite.  The waterfalls are at their peak, everything is green, and the summer crowds haven't quite hit yet.  A great choice.  That's exactly the time of year I most often go.

There is information online at the Yosemite NPS site tracking the historic opening/closing dates of the Tioga Pass Road, along which you did your photography.

I'm very familiar with that region, having gone there for a number of decades - camping, hiking, backpacking, cross country skiing.

IIRC, the closing dates for Tioga Pass road have been as early as October (we were stormed out of a late season pack trip in the area a few years back) and as late as January! More typical closing dates seem to be in the October/November time frame - once the first "real snow" falls they don't plow the road and it closes.

Opening dates also vary quite a bit depending on a range of factors including the snow depth and how early/late the thaw happens. I haven't checked the actual record this morning, but I believe that April openings have happened, though they are quite rare. May or June openings are more typical. I distinctly recall one season in the 1990s when the road remained closed until July.

Once it opens, conditions are often still quite winter-like. At first no facilities are available, in wet years the creeks can be dangerously high, and there can be quite a bit of snow still on the ground.

The normal "high season" along Tioga Road is probably more or less mid/late July through the first week or so of September. Those of us who go there a lot and try to escape crowds aim for mid September though the eastern Sierra aspen season in early/late October, when the area is stunningly beautiful but far less populated. But once you get to this part of the year you can no longer take the weather for granted. While it can be sunny and beautiful, Pacific storms often begin go come through and can close the area for a few days... or the whole season.

My point is not to make assumptions and exagurations.  You can think anything you like - I'm still right, it's not a summer only road by any means, which is all I ever said about it.

Technically correct since it frequently but not always opens a few weeks before the summer solstice and generally is open for at least a few weeks after the autumnal equinox. It closes when the first real snow falls and remains closed until winter conditions have ended.

It is generally closed at least half of the year and sometimes more.

Are you still trying to pick an argument with *me*, kaelaria?  I'd rather not get into "I was right, you were wrong" fights with anyone, including you; it's not worth my time.  This will be my last response to you on this thread.

When I said the Tioga Pass road was "summer only", I meant "summer" to be an approximate term, starting somewhere around "May to July" and ending somewhere around "September to November", and, given that, I see nothing wrong with my original statement.   If you want to believe you've "won", I'm very happy for you.  Will you please leave me alone now?

Argument?  Where is the argument?  You made a false statement, I corrected it for the benefit of everyone else reading this thread, that's all.

If you now want to save face and change your statement, that's fine.  Most people are bigger than that and would simply have said 'doh, you're right, it's not summer only'.  But that's ok, as long as people know the truth, that's the only important thing here!  

Leave you alone?  I don't believe I've knocked on your door, emailed you, sent you a PM, called your phone, picketed your driveway, come to your place of work, sent you a letter, etc.

Kaelaria, proving who is "right" about the most accurate way to describe when Tioga Pass road is or isn't open is not exactly up there with solving world hunger in the grand scheme of things.

On a more interesting topic, I just heard that the park service - in its unbounded wisdom - whacked down several of the large, old, and beautiful trees at the Wawona "Tunnel View" overlook that many of us have learned to shoot around or incorporate into our photographs. Apparently they wanted to "improve the view" of the Valley.
