Z3100 idle
« on: March 04, 2008, 03:50:41 pm »

I like to work in silence.
When the Z3100 is idle, it's still humming.
My intention is to turn it off when not needing it (I don't print everyday),
but as I understood the device electrically maintains printheads when idle,
my intention is to let it do this by turning it on every night.
Is that a problem ?
I'm asking here because HP customer support in Europe is always a pain to reach
on the phone (except in the UK, where it's surprisingly efficient).

Apart that, is Ethernet connection faster than USB ? Any experience ?

I started with USB and switched to Ethernet.  Other than some firewall issues the Ethernet seems to work better.  As to which is faster that kind of depends on how your machine and environment is set up.  Theoretically USB should be faster at 480Mbps vs Ethernet 100 Mbps but what else is on the bus and the network providing collisions that must be negotiated will be the determining factor.

I leave my printer on 24x7.  The slight hum is the spinning of the hard drive I think.  Based on my room and the position of the printer the hum is something I rarely hear.  I would image that your tactic of turning it on overnight should be fine.

Thx, Ron,
Well, for now, USB works quite nicely. Experience will tell.
For the noise, I'm truly oversensitive…
I should try some place in the desert…

Perhaps I just have a lot of background noise that masks it.  I do usually run the stereo.  I've decommissioned my NAS server with 9 10K RPM SCSI drives and three fans so it sounds like a cave in here now compared to before.

Ha, yes, I have it too but rather at night.
Right now, if you don't mind, it will be back to the past :
Duke Ellington, "Piano on the Foreground"

More seriously : my HP correspondant told me I could easily make a selection in Photoshop
to make 2 prints in the width of the roll, so maybe 2, 24x30 cm side by side, so as to use
most of the paper width (now I'm being Ebenezer Scrooge again). How can I possibly do
that ?

Ahhhh.... the Duke.  Now you're talking.

I don't print from Photoshop.  I use Qimage where multiple prints across a roll are easy.

In fact, I found an option in HP driver for Mac to do so.
No Quimage for me : they don't run on Mac (no Parallel for me either).
