any tips to speed up capture NX?
« on: March 03, 2008, 03:28:30 am »

hey there,
why is this capture NX so awfully slow, that you get frustrated after 5min.
the resolution´s so much better than lightroom, at least with my D3 files, but it´s a P.i.t.B to use.
any suggestions?
i´m on a macbookpro 2,2 with 4GBram
cheers, zobelinski

1. Try to reduce the cache size to 1/10 - 1/8 (the less the better)  of your HD free space. NX works best when the cache is outsourced to an external drive but that dosn´t work with a macbook.
2. Close any other application like PS, Lightroom, etc.
3. On Leopard i disabled the dashboard/widgets. That worked wonder on my powerbook. You can deactivate/activate them with a simple script called "DashOff_101.app" - google for this please, i can´t remeber the download link.

Nikon is working on a faster version which hopefully will be released soon.
Hope it helps a bit.

hi joern,
thanks for the tips.
i´ve reduced the cache size.
downloaded the dash off thing and it seems to be working.
and , yes you can assign the cache to an external harddrive. at least it give me any trouble, when i did it . but than i´m on an intel mac, which may be different from your one.
so i´ll have to check a bit more, but all that seems to have given me some more speed.
although i still think the general behaviour of NX is quite cumbersome.
for instance , when you´re doing whitebalance it always switched to closed side menues and stuff like that.
let´s hope for the best, thanks again.
