Photography Programs in SW Ontario
« on: February 22, 2008, 04:50:28 pm »

Guy came into my studio in Kitchener today looking for serious photography instruction for a career in commercial/glamour.  I don't think he's ready for (or can afford) one-on-one or apprenticeship.

Aside from degree programs at York (which I am pointing him to), are there any other campus-style programs?  I firmly believe that the campus experience is essential to success in the commercial world, so photo-school-by-internet is not something I'll recommend.  He's not happy with vocational-level instruction (dropped out of Conestogo's program), so apparently he's fairly particular.  Still, I want to give him some pointers.

Any to pass along?

They (at least one campus) are located in the CBC building on Front St. W.

There is an apparently-good photography program at Ryerson. I have been told they have access to professional equipment and studio space (as well as discount programs with local retailers), which would seem like an important consideration.

When I visited the OCAD exhibit last year, the photographers working on corporate-style photography were showing some really nice stuff (the food photography was excellent); the art photography, on the other hand, was uncreative, technically-poor trash, so I am really not clear if they are separate departments, or what is going on there.

From a self-education point of view, while he is waiting and looking, might I recommend Strobist and Light, Science and Magic?
