Nikon 18 to 200 VR Lens Problems
« on: February 21, 2008, 02:10:39 pm »

I purchased a Nikon D300 camera with an 18 to 200 VR lens. A great combination, one size does all rig. I am experiencing the lens will fall or creep out to the 200 mm size when just walking about. It will not stay where it has been last used.

Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone successfully had it fixed under Nikon Warranty? I have never liked lenses that creep out.

I have the same lens, and mine creeps too.  However, the majority of the lenses I've owned (both Canon & Nikon) do the same thing.  For a lot of lenses, that's just normal.

I carefully researched this lens because I wanted to replace a 24 to 120 to get better wide angle coverage.  I love the lens and bought one even though zoom creep was a problem that many people reported.  Mine also creeps but mostly this is not a problem for me because I carry the camera by the barrel of the lens with the neck strap around my wrist.  This is slightly faster getting the next shot off than trying to carry it by the strap or by the grip and you do not get any creep.  If you carry it on your shoulder then you might as well set it to the 200mm position because that is where it is going to be.

I think this is a really good lens for its purpose but it is not the same build quality of 70-200/80-200 f2.8  (or as heavy and half the price).

The one case of Nikon fixing this lens I heard about involved tightening the action of the zoom and it was no longer smooth and easy to adjust but it did not creep.

Well, almost all "consumer" zooms do creep like that, regardless of brand.  My 18-200 did, my Canon 28-135 did too.  My Tamron 28-75 had a special "latch" to lock it in the 28 position; i never used it.

Just learn to live with it....  If it´s any consolation, the (super expensive, extremely well made) Hasselblad Makro 120/4 I owned ages ago did creep something horrible when hanging down (in that case, it was the focussing that crept; it was no zoom).

What you might want to do, although not aesthetic, is to twist a fat rubber band around the lens.  You can still zoom with it, and it won't creep.  Mine creeps too.

I do not understand the idea of the rubber band. Can you elaborate or post an image?
