Eagle watch on upper Mississippi.
« on: February 14, 2008, 05:30:23 pm »

At the National Eagle Center in Wabasha MN. they say the first week of March is the best time to veiw (and shoot) eagles there. They gather there and wait for the water farther north to open up. Three weeks ago there were 51 eagles at Collville Park. On a good day you could see 100 birds.

I plan on going to the river near there (Red Wing MN.) as I live less than an hour away.

If anyone else is planning to go to that area maybe we could meet. At times there are many shooters there, several with tripods & big glass.

I was kicking the idea around last night about going down to Redwing for the eagles.  Possibly see you down there.

EBBS,

Small world, I live in Cottage Grove too.

Red Wing is usually where I go a few times a year. Just south of Red Wing is a power plant that keeps the water open and a park there that I go to.

It is well known to eagle watchers. Collville Park.(or something like that)

I usually make my decision to go or not based weather forcasted for a week-end. Tenativly The first week-end in March is good.

I'm in Stillwater...
Wabasha can be hit or miss. I have been there when the eagles move in close, and have also been there when I couldn't buy a shot  . I'd love to meet some LL photographers to do a bit of eagle shooting.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in shooting on the first Sunday in March.
cheers,
bruce

I was at the park just south of Red Wing Saturday morning and I think we counted around 30 eagles.  Lots of mallards to shoot between eagles (the eagles didn’t seem to want to wake up that morning and just sat in the trees along the river.)  A few eagles went after the ducks, they weren’t successful, but it was good action.  Some one dragged a deer carcass out on shore as I was leaving.  That should make some nice pictures if they start feeding on it.

I might possibly be in for the first Sunday in March.  I will know more my schedule in a week or so.

I'm in Eagan, and if I can swing it, I might try to get down there myself!

Colville Park is about 3 miles south of downtown Red Wing on hwy. 61. The exit is on the right and you end up going under hwy. 61. It is not very well marked, but you should see it. There is not much else around there. ( A motel I think.)

The first Sunday in March works for me. I'll be the guy with the camera.

I’m in for the first Sunday in March.  It could be the first meeting of the Luminous Landscape forum, twin cities chapter.

Monday Feb. 25th I was down there and it was overcast and I only saw a few birds. The bay that is usually open was frozen because the power plant that keeps it open has been shut down for maintainance. I asked at the power plant and they said that one boiler started today and the other will not be up and running for two or three weeks. That water should be open again by the week-end and the river is open 100 yards away.

The weather forcast isn't too good for the week-end.  It will be dissapointing if it is not much better than today's birds & weather. Cross your fingers!

I'll be there unless the weather is total crap.

BTW, The park is just under 2 miles south of downtown Red Wing & the sign says "City Park"

Thanks for the update Tapeman.  Hopefully the weather and birds cooperate Sunday.  If there isn’t much going on in Red Wing I have seen times when there were 100’s of eagles sitting on the ice of lake pepin just south of Lake City.  Just another option.  The birds have to be some where we will just have to find them

Not that I have a lot of faith in weather forecasts beyond 48 hours, but I am hoping for clear and sunny skies. As a Minnesotan I am prepaired to deal with cold/wet conditions.

48 hours is generous! I figure 24 is plenty.
I'd rather have a "bright overcast" sky

The bay is open now. There were not that many birds and they were not that active. We saw a couple of dozen.

Better luck tomorrow, I hope!
