Conditions in Lapland, Sweden, in early May
« on: February 10, 2008, 05:48:29 am »

Hi,

I would like to know whether it makes sense to go to Laponia/Norrbottens Län (Sarek, Padjelanta, Stora Sjöfallet, ...) in early May. The question is whether it makes sense to go there as one would have to hike to see most of the places, but the snow melting is usually not entirely over. Is it all a giant swamp? Probably you can't walk through rivers you normally can?

Thanks,

Thomas

I think May is to early.  Typically you will find lots of snow at higher locations even in mid June.  Where the snow has started to melt there will be lots of water.  This means you will waste lots of energy getting to your locations, and it is very likely that you can´t get there at all.

The season starts in mid June. Before that, the infrastructure is not there. For example, bridges you need to cross to enter Sarek are removed in winter. There will not be regular boat rides across the lakes. Lodging will be difficult to find.

I´d recommend that you go sometime between mid June and mid September.

regards,
Henrik

I heard that NP infrastructure for hiking will not be present.

Well I do not have a choice actually. I will go to the south of Stockholm at the end of May. So I may either go to the north before or leave it.

Thanks for your comments anyway.

... you must be a member, I didn´t know that before. But You click "> Bli medlem gratis här" high up in the right corner of page.  When you want to start new diskussion click the red "Ny diskussion" button on left side....

OK, even more good luck with this!

Thx. Swedish is not too far away from German. If you read it loud you know what is meant
