Kata BP-502 + Sinar F2?
« on: February 02, 2008, 05:41:37 am »

I'm looking for a large backpack and I stumbled upon the Kata BP 502:

The internal main compartment is about 38cm x 28cm x 54cm, which means that I could store my Sinar F2 without disassembling it.

Can anyone confirm this assumption or does anyone have any experience with this backpack (especially with a large format camera)?

I use the Kata 502 and it is a great bag! Unfortunately I am growing out of it with a recent purchase of an additional lens, but it fits quite a bit. I have two Hasselblad H's and the lens set except for the 100mm. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I should mention that I don't backpack with it; I use smaller bags because I think it's just huge for backpacking. Perhaps I misunderstood, I just use it to hold my gear and I work from the 502 bag--right now it is my primary bag; but for backpacking the bottom is way to bulky and deep (although some may like it). But it is a great bag nonetheless.

How far do you intend on hiking with it? Sorry if I misunderstood.

I just measured mine: it's about 13" - 14" thick at the bottom and about 9" thick at the top (meaning it would stick out 13" to 14" from your lower back). If you had a big frame/build, it may be a great backpacking bag. I just don't want to give you misleading information. But it's solid and extremely well built! I hope this helps.

Well I was intending to go hiking with it, something like a 2d-trip in the mountains. The major problem with my previous backpack (Lowepro CompuTrekker AW) is that it's just too small for me (not just for my camera gear  ) so it has to be a large backpack.
I really don't want to disassemble the camera any more, that's such a waste of time! And even if I disassemble it, it still uses up all the space in the backpack so nothing else fits in there except for the light meter and 5 double sheet holders and...well, that's it    -.-

After all I don't have many choices, I could go with a hard/softcase but that'd be way more uncomfortable than a large backpack

Although I love my Kata (have the 207 which is slightly smaller and fits in an airline overhead bin), you'll find that there will be no room for any of your camping gear, food, etc.  The only effective solution I've come across to carry your camera plus supplies is a real backpack with a bunch of neoprene wraps/padded cases to protect the gear.

Today I received the backpack, it's simply awesome!!!
It's big enough for the camera and a lot of stuff like my sheet film holders and the exposure meter an much more (food, camping stuff etc)
The only problem is that the interior compartment is of course not made for a monorail camera so I'll have to put something together myself (like a self-made foam insert). But apart from that it's perfect for my needs!

Everything else, like a tent or snowshoes or whatever, I can attach to the backpack without any problems.
