PhaseH25/Mamiya RB67 ProSD or Canon 1DsIII
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:28:56 pm »

hi,

please help me decide if i should buy a refurb H25 for my mamiya RB67proSD or go for a markIII? I have three lenses for the RB ie. 50,90 n 180 all k/l series. I also have a 5D with 3 primes. Cost of the back and 1DsIII is exactly the same.

Qualitywise i'm sure mamiya/phase wins. My only worry is that how long will the back last, it came out in sept 2003. I love the mechanical mamiyaRB n can live with the H25 as i'll be shooting tethered only. Canon seems a safer investment, but it's not medium format.

What should i do?? Also any tips about mechanical body with H25 will also be of help.

thx,
sid.

No Brainer,

I would stick with the RB and H25.  The back will last as long as Phase supports the H25 firmware and include in their software.

I used the P series with the RZ and it worked great!

Best of luck.

Pick yourself a used 1Ds Mark II down the line for $2,500

Best of Luck

Sid,

What type of work do you shoot?  If it's mostly tabletop / product, I would go with the H25.  If you shot more location work, I might lean towards the Canon.

When you are ready to upgrade in the future, the H25 will hold its value much much better.  Its definitely the better financial investment.

thnx for the replys guys. H25 seems the way to go. I'm not worried abt the software upgrades/firmware etc as long as it works the way it does now. I'm worried about the ageing electronics. I wouldn't want to buy a 9000$ paperweight.

Chris: I mainly shoot studio/location fashion and advertising. Like i said shooting tethered is not a prob. If i have a p25, i'd shoot it the same way. Why do u still suggest canon. Anything i should know (glitches?)

Sid,

I would only say go with the Canon if you need the portability or fast shoot speed.  Since you are a studio shooter and don't mind the tethering, I would go with the H25.  As it was stated in a previous post, the H25 will maintain it's value longer than the Canon.  We have two H25s currently for sale if you are interested.  You can PM me or send an e-mail to the address below.

John,

Thank you!  I wish I could take all the credit, but Doug Peterson (from our Miami office) deserves the credit.
