Lightroom On MacBook With 2 Gig Of RAM
« on: January 22, 2008, 08:23:20 pm »

I need to replace my old laptop and I'm thinking of a MacBook with 2 gig of RAM. This will only be for image browsing and minor adjustments while traveling - it's not for heavy duty image processing or any color critical work. If it lets me back up my images to external drives and review my days take without feeling like it's running in slow motion, I'll be happy.

Given it's intended use, is 2 gig of RAM sufficient for running Lightroom, or should I go for 4 gig?

I think it depends on what you're shooting with. I found 2 gigs on my G4 adequate for 1Ds mkII images, but not enough for my P45+. There was a lot of waiting for images to load. I don't know enough about processor speed vs memory to be dogmatic though!

Of course, my MacBook Pro has a faster processor so it's difficult to compare directly, but I'd still go for 4 gigs if in doubt.

I'm doing exactly what you describe on my macbook (and not a macbook pro) and it works fine.  The smaller screen forces me to close the side panels more often than on my desk top, but other than that I have no problems.

The main difficulty I find is variation in screen brightness. Mains power gives a different brightness from battery, and it is also very easy to press the function keys and change from profile. (I think that all laptops do this.)

The glossy screen is OK after a while. You just move the screen to remove the reflections.
